Marilyn asked me three years ago to go on her program and I turned her down. Well, last week following a three-hour conversation with her, I changed my mind. I guess you could say I am a little stubborn. But, this woman's concern for me and my well-being touched my heart. It's a cold world out there. People like Marilyn are priceless gems. When someone like Marilyn comes into your life and demonstrates care above and beyond what you really ever expect (i.e. a 3-hour phone call), if you do not pay attention something is really wrong WITH YOU.

I am still on Lesson 1. In fact, I am doing it a second week. But, here is what has actually happened. I have been trying to introduce Wi-Fi into my dysfunctional county since last year. No success whatsoever - until this week! In addition, someone called me up on the phone wanting to hire me to do some marketing. Now, what is strange about this is I have not been doing any advertising. Yet, the man said his wife saw something in the newspaper about my company - most have been a press release - and asked him to call. I met with this person just yesterday. Come to find out he is a member of my church. I will probably be meeting with him again today following the church service.

Sometimes the way things come together it is just too much of a coincidence to be a coincidence. Take what happened to me between Friday and Sunday this week.

Friday night I meet with partners of well repair company at a restaurant. They want to grill me on what my marketing can do for them. But, right away there is a problem. They want to target Mom & Pop homeowners in the county who have their own wells. They tell me the county records on this information was burned up in a fire. I tell the partners what we need to do is issue press releases so the homeowners can find them. But, the partners do not like that idea. They want a list of homeowners with wells. I am clueless as to how to proceed. I don't know anything about the well-repair business. I sense the partners are not sure what to think about me, either. They decide to talk between themselves about me.

Fast forward to Sunday afternoon. I am mowing the lawn. I run over a PVC pipe that is sticking out of the ground. I am helpless to fix it. However, my neighbor on the other side of the fence also sees my dilemma. Suddenly, he is in front of me with PCV equipment - eager to solve my problem for me. But, that is not what the most amazing thing here. Since I do not know what this guy does for a living, I ask him. He says he works for the Santa Rosa Water Dept. So, I ask the question - "Would you know how to get a list of names of homeowners in Lake County who have wells?" He says it's easy, just contact the Health Dept. The Freedom of Information Act should allow me to gather the information I need.

What are the chances a neighbor sees you in trouble and comes to your rescue with PCV values and repair equipment? What are the chances this same neighbor just happens to work for a water department and knows how to find homeowners who have wells? What are the chances just two days earlier you had a meeting with someone interested in hiring you, but needed information from you that you did not have? Then, thanks to an accident two days later you are able to have the information they need? Had my neighbor not been home and and outside when I ran over that PCV valve with a lawnmower, none of these amazing coincidences would have materialized.

Does anyone here remember when you were a little kid and someone called you a name and the next thing you know you were in a name-calling contest? Who wins the contest? It was usually the person who has the last word in the conversation.

Well, when you become an adult, name-calling gets replaced by online flames. And, those tend to be hard to put out once they get started. It is not easy to gracefully exit a raging online flame.

Today, I went to the Post Office and received a letter which attacked me for trying to be helpful. It was the equivalent of being slapped in the face for offering to do a good deed. My first thought was, "How dare you speak to me in this manner when I am offering to help you? What's wrong with you, anyway?" But then, I reflected back on my little kid days and the name-calling and more recently online flame experiences.

Guess what I realized? I realized I do NOT have to feed into this negativity. There is absolutely nothing to gain from attempting to win an argument when the people you are dealing with demonstrate they do not care about you. There is absolutely nothing to win when people do not care who you are and what you have to offer.

In the Bible, it tells us Jesus left Nazareth because the people there did not have faith in who Jesus said he was. Jesus went elsewhere and found caring people.

Does it matter that you surround yourself with caring people? That is to say, does it matter that you surround yourself with people who encourage you and try to bring out the best you have to offer? Or, is it irrelevant? Well, I think this is such a huge issue that it can transform any human being's life...one way or the other.

Any rose garden folks on this network? For those not acquainted with the magic of rose gardening, it matters how you prune rose bushes. It you prune them properly, rose bushes will bloom for you ALL season long. But, if you do it wrong, or you simply ignore the rose bushes altogether, you could end up with no roses at all.

Well, I think people are lot like roses. Knowing how to care for people can make all the difference in the beauty that surrounds your life. And, that is why I have decided to seek out caring people...wherever I can find them.
