You Don't Attract What You Want. You Attract What You Are.

On a network forum recently, someone mentioned about "rolling with the punches" in life. Another member responded with...

"Marilyn will have to validate this, but as I understand the Law of Attraction, if you choose to "roll with the punches" the Universe will likely give you punches to roll with. How funny is that?"

So of course I had to join in and asked...

"I wonder what happened to all the viewers who watched that old TV commercial a zillion times: 'How about a nice Hawaiian punch?' Heh, heh."

Now the real topic of the thread was...

"Do you ever think about what you want your life to be like in five years? One year?"

Of course the prosperity teacher in me saw a challenge in this question and I had to respond. This is a bit profound for those new to these principles, but read it over a couple of times. You'll get it. :-)

When we "want" something, it's giving the message to the mind and the Universe that we don't have it. And the law is that we attract what we "already have" in consciousness.

Dr. Joseph Murphy: "We don't attract what we want, we attract what we are."

It took me years to REALLY get that. We attract what we are in consciousness. Period.

So the way to really manifest our desire is to think and feel that we already have it...as Dr. Murphy would say, "Feel the joy of the answered prayer." Live in the state of the fulfilled desire, feel the reality of the goal accomplished.

THAT's the key to manifesting what we want.

We were discussing this in one of my private telephone groups. First I had them reach a certain state. I had everyone imagine that all of their needs and wants were met in this moment of time - mentally, physically, emotionally, financially, spiritually - I wanted them to let go of all sense of "needing" or "wanting" anything and in the NOW moment feel complete satisfaction, complete fulfillment. Complete relaxation.

So, now there was nothing to want. However, now in this fulfilled state, they could create anything at all. That is the nature of life is to keep creating and expanding and growing. So if all of our desires were fulfilled, the next step would be to create something new. Just like when we attain a goal, we then go for another goal. And in a relaxed, calm state we can create - without static and distraction from negative thoughts or feelings.

So, when the students reached that completely fulfilled state, I had them pick one thing that they wanted to create in the near future. But I had them create it in consciousness (thought and feeling) NOW. Again, there was no "wanting", "needing" or "desiring." There was only the creating - in that moment. There was only experiencing the creation itself.

I had each person create their scene and describe it as it was happening in that moment - but it was important that they get out of their heads and completely into their feelings - what they were feeling as they experienced the created event. Whenever they would describe it like it was "out there," I kept bringing them back to what they were feeling in that moment as the event was happening. They were there, immersed in the role. Immersed in their feelings. It was incredible - there were tears of joy, feelings of overwhelm (positive), deep feelings of gratitude.

These students were LIVING their desire, not wanting it. Why would we want something that we already have? I would bet that each of these students will see their creation appear in the physical world in a very short time. I told them to repeat this creative exercise as they fell asleep at night.

And what is most interesting is this...when this does happen - when our creation does appear physically - it won't even seem like a manifestation. It will seem like there is nothing unusual going on. That is what happens when we have already accepted our desire in consciousness. It's like it's just the normal flow of things. But then we look back at the whole thing and say, Wow, I created that - first in consciousness, then it appeared in my world.

Words and affirmations are powerful - you have heard me say that. But just ONE moment of feeling the reality of your desire is more powerful than a thousand affirmations.

So don't "want" it. Own it. Be it. Experience it.

As the greatest teacher of manifestation, Neville, advised: Ask yourself, "How would I feel if...?"

There is a whole lot in this.

One aspect that springs out for me, relates to where the locus of control in life is. I think Marilyn is right, and we do attract what we are.

That brings us to ownership of just what we choose to be.

When we own how we are - we are finally in a position to look at that objectively - no sugarcoating, and no false modesty - and think of what our strengths are, what our weaknesses are. What areas that we are sabotaging our own success in life. What bad habits are we sustaining? It is from that point, when we have a very clear understanding of who we are right now, and how we are choosing to be, and reviewing that. Making choices about what we'd LIKE to be if there are things that we are doing that are hurting us. Things we are allowing others to do to us that are hurting us. Things we are not doing that would benefit us.

I listened to a radio broadcast the other day of some young people talking about their drug addictions, and they made the comment that they had to be ready to make the change. Because stopping taking drugs wasn't all they had to do. They effectively had to stop living the way they did. To eliminate the drugs, they had to change their whole life and what they might consider to be Who They Are. Change from who they are now - to a new person to be.

And I thought about it some, and something was nagging at me that there was a basic flaw in the premise, and one that I have notice at a less than conscious level before, but never quite put my finger on. And I realised that this is what we very often do. We mistake our habits and what we do, how we live - for who we are.

We are not what we do. Very often we are capable of much, much better than we do.

What a shocker, right?

But when we do that which we are capable of, we often learn that we can be capable of even more. When that aligns with our values, then we have the ability to attract ever better things into our life.

Years ago, at a conference on "Selling to A Grade Clients" a phrase was used that has always remained with me. I think it fits here too.

"To sell to A Grade clients... you have to be an A Grade person."

Like Marilyn said. You don't attract what you want. You attract what you are.

Be well.

Dear Friends,
Absolutely true, I have been living this concept for about a year and it is so true. I've always treated people the way I wanted to be treated, with joy, thus I am surrounded and greeted with joy; I have always been a positive thinker (glass half full as opposed to half empty) and even though I've gone through challenging times, I have always come out on top in some form or fashion. What I have learned though, for the past two years, is that you actually have to get rid of the "want" and "act as if".
This is an old concept. It is mentioned in the Bible and Torah several times. "Living in this world and not of this world" concept also helps us humans to realize that we can strip away what the world has taught us as to how we achieve success and truly accomplish what we want and need.

Thank you for being another confirmation that I am on the right track.

God Bless

Marilyn:

This is a powerful message. I appreciate the truth behind it. And what's really coming to me right @ this moment is the idea that when we arrive at the understanding, it doesn't seem like a manifestation but, rather, nothing unusual. This is as it should be . . . because we already ARE what comes our way.

I think we often work so hard at IMAGINING how something might be, we make that our life's work. Your note reminds us that by doing so, we waste that which already exists for us -- we have to accept that as fact & as our reality.

Marilyn,

Here you are telling us that we don't attract what we want, but attract what we are. And, what I am hearing in the news these days is questions about what the candidates who want to be President are attracting. The questions go like this, "Who is Barak Obama? What does the guy think and feel about America, really?" "Who is John McCain, really? What does he really believe is good for America?" Could it be that from a political perspective people are more attracted to idealism than the REAL PEOPLE that supposedly represent those ideals?
