Here is a question I recently answered for a service-based entrepreneur (life coach). I thought the answer might help others here who have service-based businesses, too!

Question:
"I am currently wanting to expand my business and offer more of a variety of products and services. I'm aware that I'm not offering anything in between my one to one coaching service and the free reports / newsletters and articles that I give out.

"I know there are lots of things I can do like e-books, teleseminars, books, online courses etc..... but I don't just want to randomly add on a product - I want there to be a succinct variety of products.

"What is the best way to create a range of products and services? Is there a tried and tested way that you know of to create a logical sequence of products and services that complement and enhance each other, offering unlimited value to the recipient....and bringing my business into a profitable place?

"I feel like I have lots of info, but I'm struggling to channel my knowledge and expertise into tangible, sellable things."

My Reply:
What is most important to look at are your subscribers. What do they want? What do those who are in your niche or target market most want?

I caution you not to do too much over-thinking in advance. If you spend too much time thinking, a few problems can occur:

1. You get stuck planning and never actually get to doing

2. You work too long and hard on one piece to make it "perfect" -- and perfect almost never comes

3. You miss opportunities to serve your niche because you cannot respond to an immediate need ("I'm too busy with another project to think about that now...")

How I have grown my business is to consider what I know and love (teaching communication and public speaking!). Then looking for a market who needs and more importantly WANTS those skills -- or actually the outcomes associated with those skills. Most people don't really want a new skill-- they want the outcome of having a skill. Keeping in touch with my target market and paying attention to their needs is what has allowed me to grow rapidly.

For me, when I get an idea that I feel excited about-- I know that's divine inspiration. I listen to that idea and typically take inspired action as a result. I try to do things as simply and easily as possible with the least expensive tools that get the job done well.

I would suggest filling your marketing and product offering funnel from the low-priced end up. Start with something lower-priced that does not require much personal attention from you after it is created. An e-book, e-course, or recorded audio series might be in that category. The deeper into your funnel, the more personal attention you can provide so the more you should charge.

It's good to take a bird's eye view of your business and come up with an overall plan. But make sure your plan is flexible enough to include new opportunities as they arise and allow room for yourself to take your own inspired action to grow and for your business to evolve as you do.
