Have you tried it? Here is the link: http://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal I have found it to be quite useful as far as finding Google's records of number of searches for a particular keyword/keyword phrase. It used to be a simple "on a scale of 1 - 4" bar in an image format. Now you can get real numbers. Competition is based on competitors bidding for the adwords placement. So, its not really a good gauge for optimizing your webpages. So, I had to manually go and look up the competition for those keyword phrases I was interested in using. But, it is free....so one can't complain, right?
