Many have noticed my absence this past couple of weeks as posts and comments have slowed to a crawl. It's been packing time here as we're getting ready for a new roof, new ceiling's (main floor) and some interior wall work to be done. Some work is from hail and water damage and some is just re-do to update the house. Might as well get it all in one fell swoop! You know?
Client work gets done each morning but the time spent to find interesting articles or comment has slowed down considerably.
Thanks to anyone who has posted and helped in any way. It's frustrating to have all the extra work but I know in the end it will be wonderful - smell fresh and make us both breath easier.
I also need new carpeting throughout but that will be a budgeted expense that will have to come sometime later on.
It's a pain in the backside when it is happening but once all the work is completed - you can stand back and say - Lookit what I did! WooHoo!
Do you have any major home repairs under way?
Eileen :D

I replaced all the floor coverings with wood laminate. I am really impressed with the ease of maintenance. Cleaning takes 1/5th of the time it did with carpet and lino.
As it installs with an insulated vapor barrier the floors should be warmer in the cold weather too.
Another project is to put privacy film on all the windows to cut down on heat transmission as well as provide more privacy.
I am still working on getting my workstations set up. The main one is done but my backup location is not.

I'm glad to hear your home improvement jobs are finally getting done! I know that stuff has been practically the bane of your existence for some time now.
Speaking of which, I'm really sorry I have also been woefully absent myself, lately.
I have just completed 2 projects and started 2 more, all in the same week and a half. During which, my computer (main workstation) decided to act all weird and lose all my TrueType fonts in Publisher after installing a Postscript app, then my laptop wouldn't, wouldn't, wouldn't get online for several hours one night, no matter how hard or how many times I tried (about eleventy ways from Sunday, at least).
So all that stuff put me back about 3 days or so. Grr.
But now things seem back to normal again. Whew!
Things were very different around here and I don't expect that to happen again, at least not for a long time.

Ever see the movie "Money Pit"?
That's my house.
The first year we moved in we had discovered the foundation leaked, the heat didn't work in half the house, the so-called "sun-room" leaked, the outside pond leaked - so we had to fix the foundation, renovate the two rooms that suffered from water damage, tear down the sun-room (which was actually a room taken from a trailer and "glued" onto the house), take out the pond (which was actually created from the inside of a satellite dish), and then once the heat was "repaired" had to replace the floor in my daughter's room because the guys who worked on the heat didn't set the rad properly and it leaked under the hardwood.
Whew!
So, now, three years and $50,000+ later, we are starting to work on the stuff we knew about.
This fall we need to get new eaves and soffitt, then we need to redo our bathrooms, build a new closet in the master bedroom, and new floors throughout - hopefully before the roof needs replacing!
Maybe we should just sell and move to Arizona! I'm sick of the cold anyway!Private Reply to Pam McInnes | Aug 10, 2008 3:50 pm | | Re: Weekend Woes - Absense makes the heart grow fonder - HA! | # | Teddy Towncrier | |
Being a contractor for many years; Performance bonds were frequently required as part of the contract. ( ..and sometimes bid bonds were required, too).
No bond .... No contract.
Wondering why home owners aren't using bonds in their contracts for residential work. Maybe the experience of chasing a disappearing contractor is a thrill that doesn't come around every day and must be experienced.
Anything over $5k I'd be also thinking about an architect who would inspect and sign off for progress draws and over $10k I wouldn't be thinking .... I'd be doing it.
Fortunately; I'm in a condo & don't have those headaches.
Bestest.
