Organization Tuesday: Book 'em, Danno! (Organizing Bookmarks--Preview)Views: 352

Whether you call them favorites or bookmarks, doesn't matter.  One of the truly "genius" bits of productivity the web has given us is the opportunity to "put a pin" in whatever we're doing on the internet and save it for later, whether later is today or two years from today.

It's a shame, but good, old-fashioned browser bookmarks have been eclipsed of late by two newer aspects of web life:  feed syndication and social bookmarking.

Sure, RSS feeds have the advantage of not only saving the site, but delivering fresh content every time a site is updated.  However, RSS feeds are not always what we need or want; I may want to buy the bunny slippers I see at a particular site, but it's doubtful that I want to be notified each time a shop's inventory of products has been updated.  RSS is great for when you want to keep getting new information, but for grabbing specific data points or locations, the mild-mannered superheroes of web, bookmarks, really excel, especially because they allow you to organize the web the way you can (and should) organize your tangible and digital files:  creatively, but methodically.

Social bookmarking also has tremendous merits.  First, instead of a bookmark living solely on your computer, where only you know that Down For Everyone is available to let you to let you know whether a site is inaccessible to everyone (or just you), social bookmarking lets you spread the word about useful sites, intriguing blogs, entertaining web features, etc.  You (and others) can share the love about the magnificence of anything you find on the web, which means that it's a huge social networking and marketing tool.  Of course, social bookmarking sites also have a side advantage in that you can access your bookmarks from anywhere in Cyberspace.  Instead of sitting at a client's location, babbling "Oh, geez, I'd love to show you that site...darn, what was it called?  Well, let me try to Google to find it...", a few clicks gets you to your bookmarks and your new role as your client's go-to gal or guy.

I'm headed out of town for a brief trip, so this is just a preview post, but next week, I plan to share tips for helping you maximize your use of bookmarks so you can keep hundreds, maybe thousands, without putting forth a ridiculous amount of effort to find what you want.  As with everything else in your life, something is only useful if you know where you've put it.

To get us up and running, however, I'd like to turn the tables and ask all of you some questions to get a better sense of your use of bookmarks.  Feel free to answer the questions asked and also add your own comments.

  1. Which is your primary web browser?  Common ones are Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, and Opera, but there are over 100 others.
  2. If you use multiple browsers, do you import your bookmarks to the other browsers to ensure that you have the same bookmarks to use with all browsers?
  3. What do you like/hate about the way your browser saves and organizes bookmarks?
  4. Do you back up or save your bookmarks?
  5. How do you tend to organize bookmarks?  Do you use sub-folders and sub-subfolders for bookmarking, or does everything exist on one level?
  6. If you use sub-folders, do you ever have trouble figuring out what category you should use or where you should put a bookmark?
  7. Do you only save your bookmarks in the bookmark menu (i.e., the long column), or do you also use a bookmark bar (also called a bookmark toolbar) which runs horizontally across the top of your browser, similar to a news ticker?
  8. Do you use social networking?
  9. If so, which are the primary sites you use?  For example: Delic.io.us, Digg, Furl, Reddit, StumbleUpon?
  10. If you use social networking, do you also bookmark locally to your computer's browser?

As always, while I'm by no means a technological giant, I hope to explore how we can apply general organizing themes to keeping our bookmarks straight, including starting you off with a list of template bookmark categories to help you separate your business and personal needs, and keep the sites you use to help you blog separate from your other marketing information.

I'm looking forward to reading your answers (and your questions).

Folks, I'm under the weather today (though, unlike Susan, it's not meteorological) so this week's "Organization Tuesday" will be postponed.

I'll definitely catch up with all of you next Tuesday. Until then, please peruse last week's post (above, in this thread) and consider contributing your answers.

Feel better, Julie!

So far, I'm ok with weather. A little rain here and there. But, it is supposed to be turning around and coming back down the GA/FL border (right where I am) this weekend. The are estimating us to get about 10 inches of rain. If we get 10 inches on the FL side of the border, and then GA gets 10 inches on their side of the border, we risk getting 20 inches added to the river I live on. This puts us at a new risk - flood!

But, I don't believe it will come to that. I honestly think we aren't going to see much from the "Little Storm That Couldn't".
