The Little Rules of BusinessViews: 336

Natalie Clegg
Recently I have reviewed all the business lessons I have learned and also the mission statement and vision for the business.

I have over the years compiled my own list of things to review and to remember to do. It is all too easy to forget to do some of these things when you are busy or running around.

So these are my most recent set of business rules:

1. Think first and then act.
2. Keep the branding consistent and at a high quality - at all times. (All our own bespoke stuff is labelled with my brand.)
3. If something is not working, change it. If something is working leave it alone.
4. Focus on getting the small stuff right. (Lots of small problems or issues can kill a business far more easily than a big problem.) This includes keeping the office tidy, the filing up to date.
5. Be unique but never re-invent the wheel - if there is a product out there that will work, use it.
6. Practice on what you are good at, or need to be better at.
7. Excellent service and delivery is required as standard.
8. Love your customers. (Really love them!)
9. Be decisive. Make decisions promptly.
10. Trust my intuition. If it does not feel right, it probably isn't.
11. Negotiate for the best rates at all times.
12. Creative Marketing strategy. Review this often.
13. Get to know your suppliers and crerate strong relationships.
14. Be disciplined in your work, be on time, and get the work done.
15. Hire the best staff, train them and focus on their strengths.
16. Work in a consistent and organised way. (I have a process manual that sets out each task and the way it needs to be dealt with.)
17. Watch the cash.
18. Network constantly.
19. Keep your own counsel, never tell anyone too much of what you want to achieve.
20. Find a Mastermind that you trust and talk often.
21. Use a Business Plan and keep reviewing. Don't let the plan limit your thinking, though.
22. Have a set of aspirational Business Values.
23. Have a Continuity Plan.
24. Encourage a sense of humour in the office and with clients.
25. Be careful of fire-fighters in the office. Often they create a fire to put out.
26. Promote learning and try new things, go new places. (Myself and my staff.) I reward knowledge.
27. Find the easy path.
28. Have a great lawyer. (This will often nip a potential issue in the bud before it becomes all consuming.)
29. Find ways to give back to society. Create a greener business.
30. Stay in the present and be confident.

I don't know if anyone else out there who has anything to add or another way of looking at these simple rules.

Natalie.
