sushi krishnamoorthi | | Friends..yesterday Ananda Vikatan, popular tamil magazine presented me glittering 8 one grams gold with vikatan logo. Not only that I had the opportunity to interact with the Mng. Directorm Eidtor and other staff who were also keen to know my views about the 'new look Vikatan'. When they cam to know that I have been reading Ananda Vikatan for 54 years (which is true too) I was almost treated as 'Bishma Pitamaha'.
All said and done, it was a wonderful experience for me.
Lalit : The article mentions about my acquaintance with Ananda Vikatan and how I started to learn my Tamil with reading the novel of eminent tamil writer Lakshmi.
It also goes to mention about my passion for reading vikatan immediately on the day of publication and how I used to take it to the school and read it keeping it inside my school Books. I have also gone to mention about how the Marathi Teacher Malini caught me reading Vikatan during class hours and asked me to stand outside the class. She also took the vikatan with her and I started crying loudly everyone thought I was crying because I was made to stand outside but the real fact was that I was worrying whether I will get the vikatan back or not and was crying.
Next comes the 'Rishya Sringar' Part. You all know who is Rishya Sringar, I suppose. (for those who dont know, let me tell you Rishya Sringar was the young rishi who spent his time in the woods all by himseld and had no interaction with the ladies whatsoever. So when he was taken to the city once, he could not recognise the women and thought them to be aliens. It took lot of coercion from his well wishers to convince him to interact with the ladies)
I have gone to explain how we ran tamil publications circulating library in the office and except of one tamilian who kept to himself with his books, all others were members of the library. It so happened one day, the peon brought a small slip of paper in which it was mentioned 'Can you lend this week's Ananda Vikatan for a few minutes' and surprisingly it was from the Rishya Sringar. Though first I got annoyed, still I sent the magazine to him because I knew in Mumbai, once you did not purchase the tamil magazine on the day of publication, you wont find the same in the book shops. Rishya Sringar came personally to return the magazine and there started the relationship when we discussed lot about the magazines and etc etc which resulted in the first inter office marriage in MMTC.
Then I have mentioned about some articles I wrote in Anandavikatan and how I am still having the Vikatan dated 20.7.1976. I have also mentioned about how I can be only lady who even during delivery pains, finished reading Ananda Vikatan and then gave birth to the baby.
Finally, I have mentioned about the fight still going in as to who will read the Vikatan first even after 38 years's of marriage.
So Lalit, now I hope I have fulfilled my promise.

Anurag Mathur | | Wow Sushi, That was amazing. Unfortunately I can't understand Tamil else I am sure I would have enjoyed the original as well. But then yes....some publications are like that. I remember reading the Illustrated Weekly of India when I was in class VIII and I remember Khuswant Singh's column " With Malice Towards One and All" in which he explained how the whole Sati system came into being just by changing a few shlokas of the original Sanskrit verse, a brilliant piece by the ( even then even more ) fiery Shobha Kilachand on the Osho Ashram...but it shut down ( the magazine that is) The Times of India however still remains a habit ( since 1978) but your association with the Vikatan is far more older and deeper.
I thoroughly enjoyed the narrative
Cheers Anurag

sushi krishnamoorthi | | Kamyani thank you very much but it is nothing compared to your achievements na?
Juno..thanks for calling me akka (I feel younger since you have not called me Amma) yeah it seems to be taken out of a movie but only the difference is this happened some 39 years back and some movies copied the episode I suppose. Should I ask for some royalty?
(In fact two of my articles were published in Ananda vikaran within a span of one month and I received for total 16 grams of gold for the two articles. Kabhi Kabhi atmakatha also becomes valuble na?)
Basab..I think the name you refer should be Shravan killed by king Dasarathan when he was bringing water to his blind parents. My man is Rishya Shringar and the version of the story is given below"
Story of Rishya Shringa
The Legend of Rishyasringa Sringeri is hallowed for all times by the ancient legend of the sage Sri Rishyasringa. Sage Vibhandaka, by a curious combination of circumstances, became the father of a child, with a horn in the forehead, born of a deer. He found himself responsible for the proper upbringing of the child, whom he named as Rishyasringa. He thought that the easiest way to keep his son innocent of the worldly ways was to keep him in forest isolation. He succeeded to such an extent that when the boy matured into manhood, he had never set eyes on any human being other than his own father. He was even unaware of sexual distinction.
It so chanced that a neighbouring kingdom suffered from a severe drought. The king Romapada was advised by his ministers that there would be rains if sage Rishyasringa, blessed his kingdom with the touch of his holy feet. Romapada sent a number of fair damsels to the forest to bring the sage. They were however afraid of sage Vibhandaka, and so approached the hermitage when he was absent.
The innocent boy was struck with the contrasts when he saw them. Their flowing hair was unlike the matted locks familiar to him. The delicious sweets with which they fed him were different from the fruits available in the hermitage. Instinctively, he was attracted towards the women whom he regarded in his innocence as sages of a different type. Apprehensive of the sudden return of the father, they left Rishyasringa hastily with a parting invitation to come to their hermitage, which was close by.
After that meeting, the mind of the boy began to dwell upon them and became restless. He was troubled by painful but exciting sensation. He finally decided to go to their hermitage. He felt they would be able to remove his mental oppression.
King Romapada, learning that the boy-sage had started from his hermitage, waited to receive him at the frontiers of his kingdom. The instant the holy sage stepped on the soil, the heavens opened up and poured-down life giving showers. The king, thankful for the favour conferred on him, showed his gratitude by offering the hand of his daughter, Santha, in marriage to the sage. Rishyasringa accepted her as his wife and remained in the king's palace as an honoured guest for sometime.
It was during this period that Dasaratha, King of Ayodhya, invited him to officiate in the yaga named Putrakameshti, by which he was blessed with four sons, Sri Rama and others. Sage Rishyasringa felt that his married life was not without its merits. It gave him an opportunity to usher into this world Sri Rama, the personification of Dharma.
