Hello!

Slap me on the wrist-- is it possible I've missed TWO posts? I did them in my head...

That leads me to a thought for the week.

When you have a lot on your plate, you need to take a break from time to time. Taking care of yourself is what we call intrapersonal communication. When you push yourself to the limit all the time, think about the messages you could believe about yourself:

"I don't deserve a break."
"I have to get all this work done or else..."
"If I take a break, I'm not reliable."
and so on....

The messages you send yourself are some of the most important messages you'll ever send in your business. If you're not treating yourself with respect and kindness, how can you treat others the same?

Effective customer service starts with making sure your own personal needs are met. When you meet your own needs, then you can meet others' needs. Think about the spiel we hear on an airplane in case of an emergency and the oxygen masks drop down, "Before assisting children or others, place your own mask on first."

There's a reason for that.

So pay attention to the messages you tell yourself, just as closely and carefully as the messages you send to your prospects, clients and others in your "space."

Have a great week!

Warmly,
Felicia

How funny, Felicia, that you've echoed a primary tenet of my signature speech (I know how you love those!). I called it the Flight Attendant Rule, and indeed,I agree that you can't be a martyr if you hope to be a hero to anyone (everyone?) else.

We all have limited resources: time, energy and money. We must wisely budget these resources if we hope to maintain physical, mental, psychological and fiscal solvency.

I like the concept of intrapersonal communication, what therapists call self-talk. Let's keep talking to ourselves...and saying good things. And I'm glad to see your post...I've felt a little lonely here lately.

Thanks for the comment on this, Julie.

As they say, "great minds think alike!" Good advice is just good advice, though, isn't it? It makes sense to take care of ourselves first. I was working with a client this week who is so overwhelmed, she gets nothing done. Then she beats herself up for not having more done and gets more overwhelmed.

That's not good for anyone.

She tells me when we talk it's all common sense knowledge-- but it's what we choose to do with the "common knowledge" that makes the difference. You can know and not do.

So let's hope more people are taking care of themselves after listening to/reading from us :-)

Warmly,
Felicia
