Questions about Nonprofit CorporationViews: 385

I'm looking into making the Bears on Patrol program a nonprofit, and I am looking for information about the procedure and requirements.  Do the requirements vary by state?  Is there a minimum number of board members required?  I've looked through websites, but the volume of information is overwhelming.

Yes, each state has it's own rules. Also not all Non-profits qualify for tax deductions on a Federal Level.

Blake,
It may be worth it to sit with a CPA that has experience in non profits to see what you need. One hours worth of $$ may save you headaches in the long run.

Also, I like your plan. I have done fundraising in the past with my business for bears for the police and we have the Lions group locally that supplies little backpacks full of items the kids may need if they are removed from home. Toothbrushes, tpaste, toys, the bear, sox, etc... Definately a needed product. Good luck!

Thanks, Chris. My accountant for my current business actually specializes in nonprofits, so it would be good to meet with him.By the way, I have a Joomla community set up now for the Bears on Patrol program here.  It's obviously a temporary location.  I'll roll everything over once we get a domain specifically for this.

If you have any Joomla questiosn just ask. I know Joomla 1.6 is coming real soon. The one thing I can say is that it will only run on php5, which shoudl make it lighter and more secure. It will also have more ACL capabilities. That is all I can disclose. Joomla day 2009 will be in Vegas on April 4th

I'll send you a PM, maybe tomorrow about Joomla questions.  My brain isn't fully functioning at the moment. ;)

Since I already have this thread about the nonprofit, I wanted to bounce another idea out there.  I know that there are gas stations/convenience stores out there that will give you a discount if you get coffee in one of their travel mugs.  What do any of you think about the idea of getting any of these places to work with me to offer a small discount if you bring in a Bears on Patrol travel mug to fill with coffee?  Is that possible or likely?

I don't see why not especailly if they are a local owner and not a chain. I just saw today a chain station that supports a particular charity has a big Soda Pop company donating a 12 pack when one makes a $5 contribution to the charity and buys a second 12 pack. So pop company makes $$, gets a write off and the charity get a donation. I think it is great to joint venture with someone that can bring in more potential $ to your fund.

I just got some really good news. So far, I haven't had any police departments on board. I just got an email from the police chief of the local department and they want to work with the bears. :)

What is a "soda pop" company? [I know what it is I am just busting your chops].

Joomla 1.6 is coming very soon. Within 1-3 months. Betas will be out in a few weeks.

LOL I didn't want to mention the giants name and being on the Left Coast we call it soda, but others call it pop, so I went with them both.

Thanks for the chop busting. just "trying" to be politically correct which is a stretch for me!
