Do You Make Use of Google Alerts?Views: 484

When I first started Urban Village Scooters I set up several Google Alerts to help me keep an eye on what others are saying about my company. I've set them up in "digest" form so that I get at most one email a day for each different alert term. This generates one or two emails every day.

I've found that 80% of the time the alerts are NOT related to my business. Most of the remaining alerts are triggered by posts I've placed in various online forums, but I place many more posts than Google Alerts catches.

Occasionally I discover something that someone has written about my business, which was the reason for setting up the GAs in the first place.

The most interesting GAs I've received have been cases where something I've posted in one discussion group has shown up in someone else's blog. The indication is that a bit of software is monitoring certain Yahoo discussion groups and simply copying everything into the blog. I've found several sites running this software.

I've wound up canceling several group memberships as a result of these discoveries.

Do you make use of Google Alerts? Are you aware that posts to this Ryze group can trigger a Google Alert? Do you care?

I was a bit disturbed to discover a recent comment left in one forum immediately appeared in another and viewable by thousands. ... Not nice.

Not having 'drilled down' into GA; I probably don't have it finely tuned but am noticing that when modifying my blog, I receive an alert about an entirely different article from several weeks earlier.

Be careful out there.

Hi Teddy. Are you referring to comments left on Twitwall appearing as a tweet on Twitter?

As to the general topic of visibility of posts to networks on the internet at large, it is worth remembering that many, many posts that are made to a public forum, have the capacity to turn up on an internet search. A good reason to not post things which one wishes to keep private at all costs.

On Google Alerts, yes I have set up some and find them useful. I am a bit puzzled why sometimes I get alerts for a post that I've had on my blog for yonks. Anyone know how that works as it does?

Tweets to Twitter are very easy to turn up on a Google search too. Word to the wise.

@Lindy. .. I deliberately chose not to mention a specific resource.

Suffice to emphasize ... Be careful out there.

Another Cranky Canuck is suing the pants off those whose posts mention him which he doesn't like. ... (I posted about these attempts at censorship by intimidation somewhere on Ryze a while back).

I use Google Alerts not for a business reason but to find interesting things about arguments and how we evaluate them, for example -- and I get an astonishing variety of stuff. I agree much of it is not very relevant to what I am looking for, but every once in a while, something really interesting comes up. But as much as I throw those search terms around in my forum contributions and my own blog and web site, I have never encountered an alert about anything I have written, anywhere. So what does that mean, coming to think about it?

hehe I just got a Google alert for this thread. Tag was my blog URL

Wish I knew what triggered some of these, I get alerts from time to time of old blog posts. Odd.
