Hi, I recently have been working on a home based business and i need suggestion on good ways and places to advertise for cheap. As soon as things pick up i will be able to increace my advertising, but right now going through collage and the wife just having a baby, i am not exactly swimming in money. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Step 1: Build your list!

Your list should include everyone you know who might be interested in whatever you sell. It should also include all the ways you know to contact them - email, snail mail, phone, whatever!

Step 2: Interact with your list!

Note that this is NOT "selling" to the people on your list. Instead "interact" means to make connections with them, so you know as much about them as you can (focusing on what might appeal to them and motivate them to buy) and they know enough about you (to build their trust). A good way is to start by asking them questions. About almost anything.

Step 3: Let your list tell you where and how to advertise to attract more people like them.

What works for my business and my customers may not work for you! Does your town have festivals every weekend during the summer that you can market around? While my town does, yours probably doesn't. Asking your list for suggestions (or at least what they are interested in) will probably pay off much better than copying what I do to reach MY customers.

Step 4: Repeat.

Keep working at building your list, and interacting with it. I've finally gotten my list up to 300 names, but my goal is 15,000. All of whom have purchased from me. THAT'S the way to make money!

(Remember: Selling to an existing customer is both easier and cheaper than trying to attract and sell to someone new!)

Hi Kris,

You have picked one of the most difficult businesses to promote online as the main company has stacked the cards against you.

MLM successes are very few and far between.
In some instances, such as yours, it is because your online presence is limited to one of many identical websites and getting traffic from the search engines is pretty much out of the question.

The company you have chosen forbids any sort of website outside of their cookie cutter ones and you cannot copy their materials to use in your own advertising campaign.

If you want to succeed at this MLM you will have to develop a MASSIVE linking campaign through the use of articles, forum signatures, press releases, or any of the time proven methods.
If you are going to go to all this work, it would be better to make the links to your own website and not one provided by the MLM company. You can then use your own site to direct people to the MLM "opportunity".

As Kurt suggested you can build a mailing list but be aware he is selling motor scooters, which, while falling under the same concept of sales, generates a totally different reaction in the end user.

You would be better off to find a 'real' product to sell.

the product is kind of a double product. It is with global resorts. It is selling both an at home network marketing job as well as the global resorts membership. If you havent heard of it before, Global Resorts provides major discounts on a large variety of vacation location. Also anyone who joins can sell the product, doing it in any way they like. Creating a personal domain, tv adds, internet, classifieds, etc. It is actualy quite neat, i have done a few things with online advertising on free sites but they seem to be all low traffic areas. I have had a few leads on it but no full sales. I know that after the 1st sale or 2 i will be fine and be able to move from there.

Kris,

I concur with all the comments thus far. Success in the MLM world is a lot tougher than those who entice you into it want you to believe. They want you to believe that anybody can do it. They want you to believe that not only will you achieve financial security for yourself and your family, but that you will have more FREE time to be with your family. Why? Because you are the boss of your own company.

As a former MLM'er who got "burned" real bad, I encourage you NOT to get paid by advanced commissions that come to you by direct deposit. Instead, request regular commission paychecks. You deserve to be paid in REAL MONEY, not debits that accrue to positive cashflow over a period of time.

You need to advertise your business in a clever way to get folks to pay attention to it. What's more, you need to make sure the "right people" see your advertising. Therefore, the first thing you should do is make a list of the folks who would be the best prospects for what you are selling. Where can you get help with that? Google BizJournals and get a copy of The List. That will give you some insight into who are your best business contacts.

If you have any questions, just send me a private email.

Thank you to everyone who has posted in response to my question so far. I realy do appreciate all the information.
The main ways of suggested advertising are online, ad banners, classifieds, things like that. There are companies who you can send an ad to which will forward it to many other sites. The name of the game seems to be mass exposure wich is true for success of almost any business.
One thing im not sure about is whether to sell mainly on the home based business aspect of the product, or the Life time memberchip to Global Resorts.
This is the link for the home based business aspect of things

This is a link to some information about global resorts.

just play the video after it loads.

Let me know what you think of the two sites and any suggestion on how to effectively use the different aspects.
I have mostly been trying to equaly pull from both sides in the same ad.

Kris,

What do YOU like about the product? What have you personally tried? What gets your blood pumping?

The reason why I chose to sell scooters is because I truly enjoy riding them. It makes it easy for me to light the fire in my eyes, so that my customers can see how enthusiastic I really am about what I'm selling. They can sense my passion even if they don't share it.

BEFORE you start spending money on advertising, determine what you're going to talk about and what you're going to say. This is ALMOST as important as deciding who you're trying to reach.

Go with your passion!

Hi Kris

I operate a business from home and use the following cheap advertising techniques to promote my business:

Method 1: Press Release
Free Press Release can be prepared and posted over the net. If the story you are selling is important, it will reach all the print media and give your business the exposure it deserves.

Method 2: Free Classified Advertising
This is another good method of advertising through the net.

Method 3: Posting Business Details on Free Local Internet
The methods we have used for exposing our business are a website known as True Local and a range of others.

Method 4: Networking
Join as many networks as possible so that you are able to make yourself known and generate referrals.

I hope you are able to use some of these techniques.

Good luck.

Thank you Krishna for the suggestions.
To answer your question Kurt, i honesly just love helping people find good deals on whatever they are looking for. I also love to travel so the Global Resorts Network seemed like a good idea to me because it saves people quite a bit of money if they enjoy traveling. It also gives them the opertunity to make some money from home.
I also do auto broking for a company called Black Diamond Auto Borkers. It is owned by a good friend of mine. I love that job because i work one on one with people, go to auction, and sell cars for less than the trade in value, which could potential save people multiple thousands of dollars. We also make a big effort to take care of any repairs they need on the car any time after the sale. Obviously the auto industry is not doing so great so i have been looking for something els that i could do which i would enjoy. So far I love working with Global Resorts, but i only started about a week ago.

Kris,

One of the easiest ways to spread a business message is one of the most overlooked and misunderstood. It is the personal referral. Getting other folks talking about what you offer rather than you doing it yourself is a worthy goal. But that is, more often than not, a lot easier said than done. Obviously, it helps to know in advance who needs what you have to offer. Then, connect with them and meet their need.

But, how do you get started? My advice to you is to ask for help. Visit your local library and tell the reference desk about your business. Tell the clerk you need prospects and don't know where to look. Granted, that is not the question most reference desk clerks expect to get from the public. But, that librarian may point you in the right direction. I would also contact the Small Business Administratiion and SCORE. If you live in a major city, consider also the Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Finally, if there is a BNI (Business Networking Internatiional) chapter in your area, it would not hurt to go to one of their meetings.

Good luck.
