OK, I finally downloaded Skype on my computer but have no idea now to use it.

Do I need special microphone or anything? I cannot picture how to use it.

Thanks for any advice.

I use a very compact headset with microphone and very small earpieces - cost me about $10 and I hang it on a nail near my computer lol. Works just fine. Quality is better than the landlines usually, and I don't have to have anyting on my head or in my hands. Simple. I usually run the sound through the speakers.

Thanks for the replies. I'm wondering can I use a headset I already have (like from a cell phone)?

Also, what is the difference between Skype and Yahoo IM Voice?

Thanks! What great resources we have here!

If your headset will plug into your computer you can use it...

I use a mic that sits on top of one of my monitors and my speakers with Skype.
There is very little difference between Skype and Yahoo Voice except quality.. Skype is much better.

Hi Paula,
I've been using skype now for at least a couple of years and it's been an indispensable business tool. It's a versatile, easy to use chat platform, allows audio and video conferencing and is 100% free when chatting computer to computer. I've only used the land line calling a few times, but the rates are quite cheap adding to the benefits.
Clarity, reliability are just a couple of additional benefits that really make this tool a must have for business.

Tim. Agreed!. .... Unless you have the unique experience of having a couple of wide awake Aussies in the conference room with you at 1:00AM EST in the morning. ...

Just ask Paula what a thrill that can be.

Paula,

As I understand it, Skype is basically an Internet phone service, yes?

My business had Internet phone service only for its first year. Initially there were no noticeable problems, but as call volume went up we started experiencing situations where one party couldn't hear the other, dropouts in the middle of sentences, and dropped calls.

We traced the problem to the broadband service. At times there was just too much cable traffic (software updates, video downloads and the like) that was crowding out the voice connection.

The ONLY way we could correct the dropouts was to sign up for digital phone FROM THE CABLE COMPANY who would then guarantee the voice connection (by giving their VOIP packets a higher priority that ordinary data).

It was cheaper for me to bring in three POTS (Plain Old Telephone System) lines and multi-line phone equipment like a "real" business.

Just something to keep in mind as your business grows.

This post could well be titled "The Land Between Midnight, Skype and Down Under."

It wasn't long after I sent my "I haven't got a clue about how to use Skype" post that I received a call from Teddy Towncrier. Not only that, I soon learned that he had conferenced in both Lindy Asimus and Alexandra Popovic so there were four of us on the phone, ur, excuse me, online.

It truly was amazing! Of course I had heard of Skype - Lamar Morgan has always been a big advocate, but I had always resisted it because it seemed like one more piece of software to download and to deal with. I was also thinking I have a cell phone with unlimited minutes so who needs Skype?

Well, last night in the early morning hours proved why.

It was absolutely thrilling to be able to speak live to people I had been communicating with via social media (Teddy and Lindy) and to establish a connection with someone new (Alex, as she is fondly called). Plus, with Skype, you have the added bonus of being able to use the chat feature to send information as well.

This girl from Brooklyn now living in Richmond,VA (who had penpals in India, England and Japan, no less) couldn't get over how she was now talking to someone live in Canada AND Australia at 1 a.m. in the morning who were actually in the midst of THEIR day.

Beyond that, being on the phone with Teddy, Lindy and Alex underscored that this is what social networking is all about. Writing posts, Tweets and so on and then making REAL connections! Skype makes it so much easier to do so without getting caught up in rounds and rounds of emails and posts. It allows for great spontaneity to your online experience because instead of waiting to call someone you can simply Skype them. I definitely get the vision of how to use Skype in business and thank you Teddy for being the Towncrier that you are and setting up the conference call last night!

P.S. prior to the Skype experience, my brother told me about voice capability through Yahoo IM. That was another unique experience last night, being able to talk to my brother through the computer versus the landline. But it wasn't nearly as unique as talking to the "wide awake" Aussies and Teddy in the wee hours :))))

Oh, by the way my Skype ID is paula.quick1, Yahoo is Press23233

It does make a difference, Paula, when we can communicate directly by Skype and it is a much faster way to connect and get a feel of the person with whom we are engaging. Text like posts are by their nature, a series of monologes, quite a different thing than even direct chat, which allows for an ongoing feedback as does speaking interactions.

I use it all the time, but I never get blase about the marvels of the technology.

Great to meet you finally.
