The Three-Wheel CarViews: 605

Lamar Morgan 954-603-7901

I went to an outdoor songfest last night outside a coffee house on the main drag through Middletown, CA. Parked over on the side of the lot was a little, single-seat, electric car. This little car is a three-wheel vehicle. It has two wheels in the front and one wheel in the back. No place for a spare tire, either. But, guess how much those little vehicles cost? $35,000.00.

This vehicle does not come off an assembly line in a major factory. No, the parts are shipped out here in a box and assembled. This is not too different than the way you got a Schwinn bicycle as a kid. You had to assemble the bike, manually.

The owner of this vehicle just happened to be the guy out here who sells and assembles these cars. Honestly, I would not feel safe on a major highway in one of those 3-wheel vehicles. Would you take a go-cart for a spin on a major highway? If not, then perhaps you know how I would feel taking one of those three-wheelers for a spin on a major highway. Yet, I could not help but wonder if I was looking at the future of America's auto industry - smaller, electric, fiberglass body and only three wheels.

Lamar where is the link to this product?

There would be something useful you could do to uplift this person you are writing about... and give us something to learn about.

Lindy,

Take a look at Myer Motors for this little electric, one-seat car and let us Ryzers know your thoughts. I would not feel very safe in that car on a major highway. How about you?

Lindy,

Here's the link to Myer Motors. Check out the video there and let all of us Ryzers know what you think. Would you feel safe driving that car on a major highway?

Downsized transportation use is increasing.

No! I wouldn't want drive cross country in one! ... but for chores around town and driving to work .... They're ideal.

Fuel prices and dependence on foreign fuel suppliers are stimulating development of alternative fuels and transportation systems.

BMW didn't buy the Autin Mini because it's cute ..... They bought the brand because there's a demand for the Mini.

Ballard Fuel Cell attracted investment from Ford & Damler and Mercedes Benz were developing fuel cell powered buses.

Support infrastructure for "replace & go" battery exchanges is currently being developed.

There's a new transportation era dawning powered by uncertainty about supplies and costs. .... One Ryzers son has joined the ranks of U.S. Electric Moped builders.

Yes Lamar: ... You are looking at the future of America's personal transportation.

Bestest.

Teddy,

Those 3-wheel cars look like toys. And, there is no room for a spare tire. Just watching the video gives me a strange feeling. It just does not strike me as a smart and safe way to travel. Listen, you are traveling in a little fiberglass container that can only hold one person. No point in going to the airport or even the grocery store. There is no space for groceries or luggage. There is just enough room for one person. That's it. Is that enough? I am not convinced.

So I shouldn't buy a motorcycle because there's no spare tire, often can only hold one person, and has no space for groceries or baggage? Motorcycles and scooters don't even have the benefit of a fiberglass shell or seatbelts!

It is a vehicle that serves a purpose ... it may not be for everyone, but if there is a market then the product (whether from that company or a competitor) will thrive.

Three-wheel vehicles are not a new idea ... do a search for Morgan automobiles, a British company that made three-wheeled sports cars. And they even had spare tires!

I would think it is great for a litle town like yours Lamar. Think of all the gas you would save.

Russ,

I think it is fair to say that most folks who own a motorcycle or a scooter have it in addition to a car - not instead of one. I used to own a motorcycle when I was a lot younger. A motorcyle is great for traveling mountain trails where cars cannot go. It's not a great resource for grocery shopping.

The idea behind owning that three-wheel electric car is to REPLACE your regular automobile. Who's going to want to give up a spacious car, go out and spend $35,000.00 to own a one-seater vehicle that runs on electricity? Is there anyone on this network willing to spend that kind of money to ride solo in a car that only gets around 60 miles to a single charge?

Lamar think of all the lone people driving cars who have no luggage but are driving 'tanks' like SUVs and 5 or 7 seaters.

That gives me a strange feeling too.

Would I spend $35,000 for a single seat electric car? If a three wheeled fiberglass pod ends up being a "chick magnet", perhaps!

Until then, I'm thinking Harley ... ;) LOL

Russ

P.S. Seriously, as a second vehicle or for someone who only needs a vehicle for errands around town or commuting to work, and who is concerned about their environmental impact on the planet, it could be a compelling case. For those occasional trips out of town or that require carrying cargo, there are car rental agencies that would fill the gap.

Russ,

There may be car rental lots where you live, but there are not any out here in Mayberry. Keep in mind that all you have in the inside of that car (fiberglass pod) is a steering wheel, floor pedals and a place to sit. The interior is not luxurious by any stretch of the imagination.

Yes, I suppose you will be doing your part to protect the environment by using an electric car. But, I have to be honest here. I would feel a great deal safer riding on a motorcycle in a busy Atlanta expressway than I would riding in that NMG electric car out here in Mayberry. And, you know what? I think you would as well.
