VA Abraham
Make-a-wish Foundation has been doing excellent work here in India since 1996. This NGO has been granting wishes of Children between 3 and 18 years of age, who are categorized having a life threatening disease. All this is acheived with the help of donations received from philanthropists / corporate houses and volunteers who work with children in various hospitals identifying the wish of the child and fulfilling the wish with the help of donations received. On fulfilling the wish, a memorable photograph is taken with the child and his parents, and the same is given to them for their everlasting memory. At present, at Tata Memorial Hospital itself, an average of 10 wishes or more are fulfilled every week.

Make-a-wish receives good funding during certain months of the year (thanks to the donors), however, all funds are used to fulfill the wishes of the child. It is difficult to divert too much funds for administrative operations for running this setup.

One of the major setbacks identified while taking the photographs of the children are that the photos are not developed immediately are given to the children. Hence many children do not receive their photographs immediately. So they are asked to pick up their photographs during their next visit to the hospital. Some do come after a few months, while some do not come at all (for obvious reasons). Hence it is necessary that instant photos be given to the child as soon as the wish is granted. for which there is a requirement of digital cameras & portable photo printers ( like the one on http://images.businessweek.com/ss/05/09/photoprinters/index_01.htm ) or polaroid cameras (incase the consumable is still available and not costly).

At present some of the volunteers make do with a few photo film cameras given by the NGO. The rest use their mobiles or personal cameras to click the pictures and get it printed out at a photolab.

Those desiring to donate new cameras and / or portable photo printers or those desiring to give away their used but working cameras and/or photo printers (Old photoprinters which you wish to give away, may not be portable, however, they must be able to print the pictures directly by inserting the memory card into the printer and not with the intervention of a PC) may contact the office of Make-a--wish foundation ( www.makeawishindia.org ) and tell them that you would like to donate a camera / Photo printer for the volunteers use. There is a requirement of about 6 such cameras / printers to be kept in the custody of the departmental stores which are tied up with Make-a-wish Foundation, where the child and one parent is taken to fulfill the wish. For donating a new camera / photo printer, it is preferable that donate it as it is, rather than as a fund to the foundation, since it is difficult to use those funds for these administrative requirements. Incase you are not from Mumbai, then you can take the help of your friend in Mumbai to buy the camera / Photo printer and personally hand it over to the office of Make-a-wish foundation, after coordinating with the authorities there. You may suggest and opt to have your name printed on these gifts. Do feel free to contact the CEO of the Foundation on his email id ceo@makeawishindia.org

Fund donations for the purpose this foundation is run, is always welcome. Volunteering work (without the need to donate) too is welcome. You may PM me to know more about the type of requests made by these children and the type of volunteering work required at the foundation. However, for this, fund donations are always preferred, as you get tax exemption certificate for your donation, as well as the foundation prefers to source their gifts from their regular vendors to get better service benefits from them.

Looking forward to a lot of response from the philanthropists for the welfare of the children of India
