Goa Portuguesa (Mahim) is the only place I know of. The food is good, but it's quite expensive.
For Balchao, the best place will be your local Mac run Cold storage shop. Farm Products, Colaba is a good bet. They stock masalas for Recheado, Cafreal, etc too.
Warden's cold storage, Kemp's corner is also worth a try.

Actually the food at Goa Portuguesa is hardly authentic Goan. The Xacuti tasted like a North Indian curry the last time I went. The Cafreal was better.

The best place for authentic Goan food is City Kitchen in Ballard estate. Its a tiny place only kept open for lunch. My dad and I love going there. The food is cheap (most dishes around Rs 50) but delicious. If you eat beef, try the roast.

If you are comfy going to 'no ambience- just plain good food' places, apart from City Kitchen, there's also Martin's at Colaba Market, behing Strand cinema.

Hi Mandy, Rhea, Suman, Priya,

The best Goan food I have ever had in Mumbai, was at a beach side place on Gorai Beach... that was more than 15 years back though. There was this Goan Family who rented out the front side of their house on Gorai for picknickers and also offer Beer and snacks.

Food, you needed to order upfront. I think the name wsa D'sa a couple of houses away from "Hendriks" - pub, which was quite popular.

The Sorpotel and Goan Sausages I had there yummmmm!!! never can forget.

Hi all,
I can add some more restaurants which serve malvani
food:
1/Gazali at Vile Parle (E),end of Hanuman Rd.
2/Saiba at Bandra (w) ,S.V Rd.
3/Highway Gomantak Bandra (E) .This is located on the highway itself on the parralel side Rd.
I know of a few places more that serve excellent Malvani food, but they look sidey but nevertheless the hot goan curry out there beats all the above three restaurants.

I think folks here have all give the names for the Goan restaurants. My favourite used to be Martin's (They are as good as their namesake in Goa).

Satkar opposite Goregaon (E) station has some delectable hot fish curry and fish fry that get back memories of my grandma's cooking. The fish curry is really amazing. This is on top of the Udipi or South Indian restaurant facing the station.

My sis normally orders malvani food from this joint called Ratnagiri, when I am at mom's place.None of us have ever been there so cannot comment on the ambience.
Telephone nos:28369134

Another one my sis recommends "Ocean Catch" near Toyota showroom Malad(W).
A few Nondescript joints which again serve malvani food
again recommended by my sister
1/Malvani Kinara-Matunga Shivaji Park
2/chimbori-Shivaji Park
3/Malvani Aswad-Parle (E)

Hi Folks,
I can surely vouch for CityKitchen as my folks used to live in the next building. I went down there on a memory trip and enjoyed the food. If you do not mind the ambience and only like to taste good goan food try it out.

Yesterday evening I was racking my brains to come up with a goan joint in and around Andheri. I called up anyone and everyone I knew to ask them if there was any goan food joint between Juhu and Malad.
None.
I was asking them about goan but they were telling me malvani or were telling me “go to Bandra/Mahim etc“

So folks, kindly help me if there is a goan joint between Juhu and Malad??
Where we could get goan sausages, fish curry etc.

There used to be a shop just outside Andheri Stn (w) called Ocean Pearls- a cold storage shop. They keep Goan sausages. You can try there.

The joint near Metro Adlabs is called Snowflake, and yes, it's pretty decent. I've eaten there frequently since 1999. Pork vindaloo and sorpotel are the signature dishes and cost Rs 50 each, but there's a range of Goan beef and fish preparations too. Never seen any vegetables in the immediate vicinity though.

Hi ,
Theres an excellent place for Goan food at Pali Market called SOUL FRY . It is next to GONDOLAS. The fish there is very fresh and surprisingly for this area the pricing is quite reasonable. A must try if you are in Bandra. I can join if anyone going there.

Goan food in Mumbai? Oh man it brings back such lovely memories and I'm already beginning to drool at some of the restaurants mentioned here and some not.

Yes ofcourse City Kitchen ranks high on my list. You can't find anything like it. As a young journalist writing for an eating out column in a leading Mumbai Fortnightly in the late seventies (non existent now) I had the good fortune to meet the owner of City Kitchen, Sachru Menezes. Sachru Menezes was the Goal keeper of the Indian Hockey Team during it's heydays. A thorough genteleman he insisted I had every dish on the menu. Something I could not possibly do even if I wanted to (Fish, Pork, Beef... how much can you eat at one go....? Yeah so ok I had a bit of all of them) but yes without going into the details it was one of the memorable eating experiences of my life.

I still visit City Kitchen everytime I'm in Mumbai.

That Portugese kitchen at Mahim, naww... no way.

Martins yes. Always stuff myself with double meals whenever I'm there. Pork Vindaloo, Onion Steaks, Beef Chilly Fry and Fish Curry. Can't help it I'm greedy.

Ok here's this absolutely wonderful poem I read around Pork Sorpotel, that most revered and cherished of Goan dishes and one of my favourites (slurp, slurp). This is how it goes:

For the hotch potch known as Haggis
Let the Scotsman yearn or yell
For the taste of Yorkshire pudding
Let the English family dwell.

For the famed Tandoori Chicken
That Punjabi's praise like hell
But for us who hail from Goa
There's nothing like Sorpotel!

From the bigwigs in Colaba
To the small fry in Cavel
From the growing tribes in Bandra
To the remanants in Parel.

From the lovely girls in Glaxo
To the boys in Burmah Shell
There's no Goan whose mouth won't water
When you talk of Sorpotel!

And Oh! for Christmas dinner
Don't you think it would be swell
If by some freak of fortune
Or by some magic spell

We could, as they have in Goa
A bottle of the cajel
And toddy leaved sannas
To go with Sorpotel!
