This is a real story that has happened in Madurai yesterday(26-08-2005).

Cell Phone Usage at Rainy Time

In continuation of the news item appearing in today's Daily paper
on the death of 3 persons in Oothangudi, I heard the details of cause of death as follows:-

At the cemetray, in total, there were about 12 persons out of which
4 of them were under a palm tree. 5 of others were also standing
beside these 4. It was raining with thunder and LIGHTNING after 7 pm.
One of them, who had a cellphone with him, had received incoming
call and when he swithced on to talk the LIGHTNING had struck and the
total effect of SHOCK attacked all 4 of them at the spot.
The man with the cellphone had died on the spot 2 others standing near to him were declared dead at Meenakshi Mission Hospital 1 is seriously injured and now in hospital 10000 Watts currnet has passed on inside the body of the man died on the spot as said by Doctors in hospital. Hence, usage of CELL PHONE AT RAINY TIME IS PRONE TO ACCIDENT.

If you feel, you can pass on this information to all concerned.

This is a message forwarded to me from someone, who, as for as my knowledge goes, does not send mails for the sake of sending mails.

There was one more case reported a few days back in this month (sept 2005) of a Engg College woman Professor being run down by a train (in Chennai) as she was walking /crossing on the track-busily engrossed in the cellphone -and not able to hear the shouts of onlookers

Cellphones need to be used at the right time and not when your attention should be on something else

Also there are warning signals installed in petrol pumps to avoid cellphones as electromagnetic interference can cause sparking at times which is dangerous
Standard operating instructions on flights ask you to switch off cellphones before takeoff

However not clear if lightning (as reported below)is attracted to a switched on cellphone-first time hearing of this -maybe there is a scientific explanation?

Every day we see someone driving / crossing the road with a cell glue to the ear and mind elsewhere. We shd start a campaign to educate cell -users about cell phone etiquette.

During my last 1 year of maintaining this virtual networking platform, I have found one thing. People who are really so unhappy about so many issues concerning society are many and many. But the conversion ratio from the feeling of unhappiness to becoming change-agents is abysmal. Again, the net is a peculiar communication mode that gives a lot of false signals of satisfaction. One such is the EXPRESSION-SATISFACTION.

Purely, an academic observation.

Govind,

You are right people are always bickering about this or that
it would do a lot of good if the same folk would come out with some concrete solutions.

Fault Finding is easy and unhappiness galore. How about exploring Changes for the Good.

sushi and nayak,

you are absolutely right in what you stated in this post.any electronic equipment be it a transmitter and receiver used for communication will be affected in case of a lightning strike [it could happen to your satellite television or cable modem computer as well] the very high voltage charge carried by lightning may hit your system causing havoc, since the equipment in itself acts as a lightning conductor and attracts the said charge.

a simple example is using your landline telephone keeping your mobile in the vicinity, whilst conversing on the telephone try sending or receiving a sms you'll find a distortion in the telephone.

Poseidon
sushi,

yes indeed cellphones are becoming a bit of a nuisance at times and dangerous too ........... i remember some 20 years back pagers were the "in" thing and still feel them to be a lot more safer.i for one,had been using them for a very long time and found it to be a very handy gadget especially whilst driving in the heavy chennai traffic or when attending an important meeting.advantages/disads are there but then it cant be helped ....... if safety is to be of prime importance i'd opt for a pager anyday.

infact in quite a few institutions pagers and mobiles are both being used, not only in india but in a lot of other countries too.mainly with professionals [surgeons for one] who need to be traced at short notice.mobiles are kept in off mode whilst the pager lets out a short 'beep' the text of which could be read later on being free.

the same could be done via mobiles too if all those who make calls send a message 1st,but do folks ever stop to think whether the person at the receiving end is free or not?

expressed my views lets hear others,

raj

Strict enforcement is the need. Actually the authorities are aware & enforcing it where possible - but the ratio of traffic constables to vehicles / road-users appears far less than needed.

Individuals who share these views on cell phone (mis)use can make a start by not using it while driving / crossing the road and taking up the issue with friends / acquaintances.

nope... strict(er) enforcement will not work. the only thing that will work is individuals like you and me putting a stop to this, by practically doing it first, then educating our near and dear ones... this is the same point you have made.

how much policing do you expect external entities to carry out? if rules were all that were important, how many crazed auto-drivers would still drive their vehicles on the wrong side of the road, blatantly in violation of the most basic "drive-left" rule? and do you really think the cops care enough to police things such as cellphone use, while there are a thousand other things that attract their attention?

my apologies for being so blunt, but i have a question to all on this excellent forum: how often do you wear your seatbelts in chennai? reason i'm asking this is, because i'm right royally proud of *always* driving with my belts snapped around, not because it's a rule, but because i'm all the safer for it. i don't care if seatbelts are outlawed tomorrow... i'll still wear them. similarly, i'll never use a cellphone when i drive, because i can afford the cost of an outgoing call, so that i can call the person back when convenient. almost all chennai-ites can afford this, but do not make the choice... immediate gratification over delayed comfort.

whoops... that was a long post, and a rant.

cheers,
yak.

i may not be able to change the world, but i will definitely be able to change my perception of it.

Soeb,

May be, this is the way how the virtual world works. Everybody would like to write and make their opinion heard. May be, it will also be termed as rude and uncivilized in the networld, if somebody is going to be asking if all those expressions, which people make out in the net, really contribute anything at all!

Here is what I said in one of my earlier postings in this thread itself, which got stampeded mericilessly. That nobody even looked at the stampeded body of my posting is evident from the subsequent postings made by other members.

"During my last 1 year of maintaining this virtual networking platform, I have found one thing. People who are really so unhappy about so many issues concerning society are many and many. Dear members in this "Using Cellphone" thread,

Let's close this thread now and think and act on something concrete. Any suggestion is welcome, but the person giving the suggestion should herself/himself come forward to do the "hands-on" to put it to work.

Now, let's see how many people are gladly coming forward? I know that there are enough good samaritans in Chennai. But, the only issue that they have to see each other in the cause to service to needy and to the society at large. Pretty steep gradient a question. Right?

Hmmm....

not a very steep gradient, govind... but a gradient nevertheless. here's my contribution (initially, at least):

very happy to contribute my mite (for whatever it's worth) to the cleansing of chennai. or bangalore. or any place in india i happen to be in at that time.

so, how do we start? if it means patting any cellphone-toting driver / rider on their free shoulder and handing out a leaflet that requests them to cease and desist, i'm game for it. i can also design and arrange to print the leaflets myself too.

but... and this is one HUGE but... will this really result in results, or will it only add to the mess of paper that's already floating out there?

any other thoughts, anyone? as govind pointed out, let's see how many people really come forward... and with usable / valuable suggestions too.

cheers,
yak.

Hello Yak,

I am really so happy to see one more in this network, having the craving to convert thoughts into action.

Cellphone safety issues ........ yes, they are really matters of concern. But the question is this. How can we pool our strengths, capabilities and collective wisdom and channelize them to apparent actions?

So, there are a good lot of issues warranting attention. The Cellphone satefy issue is one. And there are many.

I am glad that this discussion-thread is bringing out one volunteer, who will push his sleeves up and get down to work. That is Yaka machi, I mean you.

I am trying to identify 8 or 10 hardcore volunteers here, WCFC. There are quiet a few people here, who are really so eager to contribute some time, energy and some money too. But it is the lack of a core group that will own up issues, which is glaringly evident. If we don't have even this small number, continuity of programmes will suffer. I think there are 2-3 people I can count already. I will keep you also in mind definitely. Pl wait for my msg to you.

Oink! Oink!! Obelix's missed dinner
Design a zapf gun that can be used on cellphone users, when they talk while driving, that will turn the fone into cinders? It will definitely teach them a lesson, what say?

Ooops! I hope that didn't hurt anyone's feelings. Just thought I'll bring a lighter vein into this discussion..

A badge/pin for those who promise to use their phone responsibly in public places could be a thought. If the movement builds up, such pin holders may be entitled to discounts and preferential treatment in stores and other public places. A solemn oath can be designed and/or a jingle/catchy music to promote responsible usage of the phone. Have a few corporates sponsor this (catch Nokia itself).

Have I redeemed myself yet, or should I keep going?

Roopa,

You are fortunate to have a baby. You enjoy motherhood and your tiny toddler is the apple of your eye! Your Ryzepage says it all!!

I don't think that the small bundle of joy that has entered in your life, that craves for your attention now, should dampen your spirits to do what you want.

I just recall what I read recently - Priya Dutt, who won the election for the Lok Sabha MP position from a Mumbai Constituency, campaigned in the election, making her go through a gruelling time-schedule, when she was pregnant. She delivered a baby just a few days before she won the election.

There are many ways how we all can contribute one way or other to make this happen. What is more important is "thought" stuffed with righteous anger, a will to accomplish and dogged pursuit.

In a few other discussion-threads, we have deliberated enough about freezing the agenda of activities for the time being. We will try to give shape to them and take them forward.

I am eager to meet you and a few others, who have been raring to push the agenda forward.

Cheers!

Selvam,

Thanks for signing up in WE CARE FOR CHENNAI (WCFC) network in this Ryze Network.

May I suggest you to put your profile (at least make a reasonable intro about yourself) in your Ryze home page, so that people may find it easier to interact with you.

As regards the objectives of WCFC, I suggest that you go through the other discussion threads. WCFC is a virtual voluntary group, aiming to turn itself into a physical networking group and contribute towards "making Chennai a better place to live in". The WCFC discussion board takes care of how, why, where, when, who, etc. of the tasks ahead. You are welcome.

This will what may happen in fixing any meeting. One or other may not be available. I am neither an exception. So, we will go ahead fixing the date for meet, after making a quick reality check. Hope you are sending a detailed mail that I requested for. I am trying to do the mapping of individual interests, capabilitities, contacts, eagerness-quotient, etc. by reaching as many people as possible. We have to be prepared for a long haul and missing a meeting shouldn't be a matter.

hey govind! my apologies for the late reply... haven't been to ryze for a few days now.

right, so where do we start? cellphones are just one of the numerous thingies that menace / plague normal life in chennai. and we can only start when there *is* a concerted group which wants to put their collective best foot forward.

do let me know if there's going to be a meet or something where we can brainstorm the best methods of attacking this problem.

ofcourse, i can understand if there's any resistance to a meeting or get-together! something that doesn't necessarily result in positive outcomes :( in which case, this platform itself and on its own may very well serve the purpose.

in the meantime, i'll wait up for your PM.

Hi,

You could count on me for this noble cause.

As Yaka pointed out, we need to practice something more meticulously before asking your neighbour to do it. The neighbour would certainly do it and make his neighbours follow. To get a buy-in for the noble thought, lets first practice.

I do not talk on my cell phone during my driving. I do wear my seat belts while driving. Though there is no law in TN that forces me do so. There is no law in TN to wear a helmet during driving a 2 wheeler too. See, forget law and forget policing, let us set examples and make others follow good habits without been policed.

Once again...I am available for this noble cause.

Though new to this network, I definitely feel proud to be a part of it.

Cheers/Raj

yo! raj, just one point, though... i believe there IS a law saying you've got to wear your seat belts, in TN.

as you already know (it's me, da!) i'm from bangalore and we have a law over there about wearing seatbelts too... mostly followed in the breach, just like out here.

btw, i feel more comfortable wearing my seatbelt and somehow feel empty without it... not sure how all else here feel, but still...

Thanks to all the members who participated in this "Using Cellphone" thread.

Do any one of you think that you could work on this project of educating people on "Using Cellphone" from this very moment? We may require 3-4 at least, who would be able to do the leg work and do nothing else, as a voluntary service, other than being in this project at least for 3-4 months. One or 2 of us may have to take this project as a long term one. You should be equipped enough and the project cannot stop for want of information or for the excuse that "we did everything but there was not much of participation from others".

I have a rider here. Working on the project doesn't mean leisurely coffee meets or reviewing the progress at a midnight party in the midst of a live band and psychedelic lights. Many a time, it will be exhausting and exacting, but still we may have to move on, unwavered and undaunting.

Ready ? Pl let me know quickly. I am here to join hands with you and do my best.

What? Not prepared. At least 5-6 of the strong-willed in this 250+ group? Then let us stop this "Using Cellphone" chat and do something that which would make us physically participate from the day one. Soeb has been hammering this point only, nonstop.

There is no dearth of ideas amongst us. The challenge lies in "who will bell the cat?"
