Is it worth it submitting to Yahoo site directory or is pay per click alone ok?Views: 963

A long time ago I did a free submit for the vacation property that we market to Yahoo's Directory and got in. Today I did a search and realized that we are no longer in their directory and it costs $299 per year - assuming they accept you. We use their pay-per-click (formerly Overture). I was thinking of signing up for their travel site pay per click also. Is it really necessary to pay the $299 per year to be in the directory or would that money be better spent elsewhere. A long time ago you just "had" to be in the Yahoo Directory - or so it seemed. We also have a wedding planning website which we never submitted. I'm not sure about submitting that one either.

Any thoughts.

Thanks

Sherry

I came across a free submit page for Yahoo, but it only worked for me if I submitted a page under the home page, for some reason. The other pages eventually got spidered, and I don't think it took all that long.

You have to sign in first, with your Yahoo name and password: http://submit.search.yahoo.com/free/request

Good luck!

Hi Sherry...

I'd advise you not to pay to be listed in search engines.

As stated in Yahoo's $299, 7 day review offer "Use of the Yahoo! Directory Submit program does not ensure that your submission will be accepted for inclusion in the Yahoo! Directory".

I've managed to get my website(www.garaughty.com) listed in the top 10 search results in over 50 categories on Google, Yahoo, etc... by niche marketing myself.

For example, go to Google.com and type in... abstract realism,
out of over 4 million listings I show up as #1

Or on Yahoo.com type in... abstract paintings and prints,
this weekend I was #3 out of over 2 million listings.

This isn't an accident. I positioned myself in narrow niche markets of the art world and over time it really paid off for me. No need to pay for it, just a little time, work and clever marketing.

I'm too busy right now to get into details but since I teach this to other business owners I network with, I'll be putting together a few pages of info soon and will gladly send them to you if you'd like a better(and free) way to get listed in search engines.

Thanks for the link. Barb. I really don't want to pay to be listed unless there was a really good reason to do so.
Marti, that success you are having is without pay-per-click?? I look forward to reading that report. I feel so out of the loop. Internet marketing seems to have changed so much or so short a time.

Hi Sherry...

about your comment, you asked "that success you are having is without pay-per-click?...

No, I don't pay to submit my site to search engines and so far I haven't had to use pay per click. I'll try to put a more detailed explanation together ASAP since I've been asked for this kind of info from other friends & biz owners I know.

The short version is niche marketing or trying to become a BIG fish in a small pond. I also do a lot of joint ventures and marketing promotions with related but non-competitive businesses.

Example... realtors using prints of my work as closing gifts when they sell a home, various types of corporations and retailers using my gift certificates as promotional give aways, etc...

None of us can be all things to all people so I try to be the best at a few very specific things which helps me to stand out from the crowded marketplace.

Do you have a website or can you tell me more about your biz and maybe I can come up with some ideas for you.

Sherry,

If you want to expand your online impact, I would suggest you create an online lens at Squidoo. It's both free and easy. You get to use some pretty impression modules, too - including Amazon.com and Flickr.com. To see what the possiblilities are, I invite you to check out my lens - Power Networking. Don't hesitate to scroll down and take the survey. The results of that survey will be posted on Friday.

I believe that you need to use more than 1 source for marketing.

If you want to be successful at the Internet Game you need to 15 different Internet Applications effectively. If you are missing even one of the applications in your marketing portfolio, you are loosing business.

I wrote a booklet on the subject. For a limited time, you can get a free copy of this booklet by going to the following link

or just go the news and announcements section at

Alex,

Would you mind sharing what those 15 applications are? I know you posted a link. I went to the link and it requested I fill out a form before knowing anything. I prefer to know what I am fishing for BEFORE I cast my line into the water.

If you approach is multifaceted and synergistic, I am all for that. But, I still would like some specifics.

By the way, you might be intersted in taking a look at the survey a lot of Ryzers recently took part in concerning marketing tools. You will find the survey results at Power Networking.

Sherry,

What is the reason for you to submit your web site to the Directory? If you would like to get free traffic from Yahoo search engine, then it is not necessary. I know of many web sites that get free traffic from Yahoo, without being listed in the directory.

Hi Sherry,

Marti makes some excellent points so do follow his advice. I don't think you need to pay for the directory inclusion either, especially if you are on a tight budget. PPC is definitely one way to gain exposure, but like all things marketing, it requires a lot more forethought and planning than just writing a 3-line ad and posting it in Adwords or Overture.

Organic search can bring you very targeted traffic if you know what you are doing and are patient, patient, patient! You can learn this form of SEO yourself or hire someone to do it. (Just run very fast in the opposite direction if anyone "guarantees" you a top 10 ranking.)

I would also consider a linking campaing to generate back links from topically related sites and directories to your site. This not only helps your SEO efforts, but gives you additional exposure to real human beings who may be perusing a site/directory for what you have to offer.

And, much like you are doing right here on Ryze, there are lots of ways to build relationships and trust with people on the 'net, even if those people never see you face to face. Offer ebooks, newsletters, or other incentives for people to get to know you. And most of all, make sure your website contains compelling, unique, USEFUL content! Here's an article you might find interesting (which I wrote recently):

To Market to Market: Why Content is King

Good luck and keep asking questions Sherry!
