Looking for ezine/newsletter listViews: 873

Dean H.
Hi all-

I'm in search of an ezine/newsletter service that could fit my needs.

I want one that would allow a user to opt-in/subscribe to various aspects of the newsletter.

For example, let's say the newsletter is about small business.

And I want an option whereby a person can tick off which part of the small business newsletter they want to learn. Perhaps, they can have the option to check off any of the following;

- taxes,
- technology,
- finance,
- marketing

I know Constant Contact has this option but I'm not a big fan of CC. I only intend to use the service a 2-3 times a month so I don't need anything enterprisy or that will cost a bundle either.

Suggestions?

Dean

Hey Dean,

Well, I was going to suggest CC until I got to the end of your mesage, but if you don't like them Aweber would be my second choice.

With Aweber you can setup unlimited autoresponders or broadcast lists, so you could maintain a separate newsletter for each topic you want to cover. This may be a little more work than using the interest categories CC lets you setup, but it should let you do what you want to.

You didn't mention if you want to do this in just text or HTML, but you should know that using HTML with Aweber takes just a little more work as you've got to provide your own html and link to an images location online.

HTH,

Steve

Got a decent (non spam) Ip listing and a bit of proficiency with PHP?

I use PHPlist and I love it - its got all of the features you want, and you'd have it completely under your own control.

The subscribing to various parts of the newsletter would mean you'd actually be mailing different bits, at different times, but I think you knew that already, yeah?

The PHP/MySQL, open source, Infinite Autoresponder allows you to set up a series of timed messages that can go out minutes, days or even years after the visitor signs up.
I use it for my free 5 day series, "Develop Your Web Presence" on www.MetaCryL.com

you can get it at http://www.ibasics.biz

While I do not have a selection of newsletters I believe it is an option.
The software allows for both plain text and html but the best results are obtained using a plain text link to a page on your site.
This allows the search engines to index it and saves a lot of problems with spam filters. (Shorter messages are better).

Steve,
Yes, I heard good things about Aweber.

>>>With Aweber you can setup unlimited autoresponders or broadcast lists, so you could maintain a separate newsletter for each topic you want to cover.

Yeah, but does Aweber allow that option whereby user can opt-in to certain categories/interests and not others?

>>>You didn't mention if you want to do this in just text or HTML, but you should know that using HTML with Aweber takes just a little more work as you've got to provide your own html and link to an images location online.

Frankly, I could care less about HTML so it's not a big deal for me.

Kai- I'm not very experienced with PHP so your option isn't viable to me.

Dean,

I have used Aweber in the past and when I did it had an import function to merge lists.

AW costs $20 a month or $180 a year.
The open source system that I mentioned in my previous post is free.
If you don't know PHP it can be set up for a lot less than you would pay for AW's service.

All the editing and maintenance is done in text so no knowledge of code is necessary.

does Aweber allow that option whereby user can opt-in to certain categories/interests and not others?
All you would need to do for this is set up separate autoresponders for each series and give your users a choice.

Hi Dean,
Since you mentioned you'll be only using it 2-3 times a month, I would suggest using a web script installed on your own servers, so you have complete control over your newsletter/autoresponder system. At the same time, you wouldn't have to pay any monthly fees.

I have developed a script that enables you to do exactly what you want(i.e) :
- Crete multiple newsletters/mailing list
- Create Option for users to check which newsletter they want to be subscribed to( taxes, technology, finance, marketing, etc.)
- And other features such as personalization, autoresponders, and reports etc.

If you're interested, I can setup a demo of this software for you on my site. Just let me know.

Hi Dean,

With Vertical Rsponse you would need to set up appropiate lists as per the subject they want to be referred to, setting up seperate auto-messages for them.

When I use it, I simply send emails to let subscribers know a new item is on-line. These messages could then simply give as link to the relevant part of the on-line newsletter.

The reason I thought they would be worth a look for you is that they don't have any monthly fees. You simply pay for the number of messages you send.

Best.

Hi Dean --

Have you checked out Lisa Micklin's http://www.ezezine.com service? She may have that option or be able to provide it for you. Lisa is an MYOB member so hopefully she'll respond to this topic, but if not you can PM her at http://www.ryze.com/view.php?who=ezinedakini

I never knew there were so many options. I should note that I don't mind paying for the service. I'd say $20/month is the max that I'd pay.

My problem with getting a free service is that it may not be up to par with the paid versions. Remember, we get what we pay for.

That was my problem with Constant Contact- they have been blacklisted with some of the ISPs. I think CC is the more popular choice for newbies but some people tend to outgrow CC over time.

I heard good things about Lisa's services and I did sign up but I don't see an option for separate auto-responders. I also heard great things about Aweber as well.

Dean,

Not always. Sometimes you get less with a paid service than you would with an open source solution.

You said you don't need to send out HTML newsletters.
(Not a good idea anyways as they are more likely to get caught in spam traps, and the formatting is all shot to blazes if an email client is set not to download images).

Sending email messages from your own server you are much less likely to get caught in black lists.

The http://infinite.ibasics.biz/ Infinite Autoresponder includes these features.

  • Subscription confirmation (Double opt in, the only way to go - Reg )
  • Easy web-based subscription
  • Unlimited messages
  • Individual message send times
  • Full admin control panel
  • Unlimited responders
  • User list importer
  • HTML and Text email support
  • Configurable inactivity timeouts
  • Database email search
  • Input security features
  • Remote subscription wrapper
  • Complete unsubscribe handler

    Each message can be personalized.

Would constant contact be the same thing but subscriber based?

It's about 12.00-15.00 US dollers per month. It tracks everything and give reports who has read what, when etc.

I use it for quartly newsletters and love it. I don't think it is an e-zine though?

Ezezine looks like a great resource, Denise I think I'll use it once my Constant Contact list gets a bit larger.

I've used Ezine Director for several years and really like them.

They have a free option for small lists, and then graduated billing options. You can set up several lists which would give you the ability for people to do the multiple opt in with a single address.

    Check them out http://ezinedirector.com

They don't have an affiliate program so no worry about making me rich on the recommendation. :)

    I have recently discovered http://www.feedblitz.com .

I used to send my subscribers a short email to let them know that the new issue was noe on-line (thereby circumventing the 'text only' problems, and most of the filter trouble).

Now, subscribers get an automatic email from FeedBlitz everytime I update my blog.

    Easier for everyone.
