On another thread (about search engine indexing), the subject of doing a search on yourself -- I call it vanity Googling -- to see what pops up.

I know a while back a long time MYOB member was appalled at what she found. And it's not as simple as just deleting a page or a post on a forum. You have to wait for the search engine to remove it from their index which could take who knows how long.

The reality is that people who are going to do business with you are smart enough to do research. What shows up for your personal search? Try it.

The main rule I have lived by over the years is that "If I wouldn't like to see it on the front page of the newspaper, I better not write it."

What do you think?

Best regards,

Denise, I totally Agree! After writing that last post, I forgot to "go see" what's up there for me... on my way now!

Denise, you have a way with words!

I love that you wrote:

No ... Bleep! hee hee! ( Lets see what google and my clients have to say about that!)

Ya know, at one time some of us were young and foolish LOL. I have definitely posted things over the years that I wish I could take back :(

I was taught (now that I'm old and not quite so foolish) that it's an error to use a P.O. Box on your website, and that it's naive to think someone can't/won't find you if they want to.

Today, I'm much more careful in choosing my words and when I want to say something I wouldn't want on a front page, I wait 24 hours and see if I still want to say it. What often happens after 24 hours is I can take the same message but convey it without emotion which of course then turns into words I'm happy to have on the front page.

GG,

I'm taking the SEO class that someone here in this group recommended taught by Cricket.

One of her lessons talks about 10 errors folks make in developing their sites. One was a site counter. She laughed saying "have you ever seen a site counter on Dell's site?".

Another of the 10 errors was the P.O. Boxes. I don't recall all of her words and don't want to misquote her, however she said "why use it?" Folks will find you if finding you is their goal.

Many many years ago, when I started in business, I also did not wish for mail to come to my home. What I did was rent a PO Box in a store front. So, my address is not a PO Box, it's a legitimate street address.

The title of the thread here on the group was "what's the real deal with SEO?".

Hi Denise and Guys... Excellent posts on this topic of indexing ourselves as well as "..beware what you say.." Excellent tip to wait a few hours or longer for an emotional email of course. I usually hit reply and let it sit there while I do other tasks to be sure I cover the question to the best of my ability before I respond. It all goes to show though "karma" and we invite anyone to google us anytime they please. We must warn you, our extended family is world wide yet 90% are in google from Mark's Uncle's Boat Biz in Mass, to a 4th cousin in N Carolina who won the CPSA award. (Nice pic of him to) Google Mark & Debbie Fortier and have fun doing yourself as well. You will Notice your ryze posts in there. HAPPY WEEKENED EVERYONE ! Debbie

My name is such a common one, I get absolutely nowhere on searches for my name (not in first 5 pages anyhow).

I actually want to be 'findable', which is why I use my 'tag' -AndyE.

With AndyE Barnes - I am the whole of the first 3 pages in Google. Great.

Best.

Andy,

We need to find you a tag line that is so individualistic and original, nobody else has it - but EVERYBODY else remembers it.

Google "Coolest Woman on the Planet" - it started out as a joke, I was helping my boys learn about SEO and key words. I bop up there at the top of the page. So, after the joke backfired, and I was THERE, I had to do something with it.

I mean - you can't just back off and let THAT one die? So, I created a site, and I still haven't really figured out what to do with it - but it's a blog site and I've had a lot of fun with the marketing aspects. Not really selling anything -yet though.

I searched my name on Google/Yahoo/MSN - with and without the quotes... I'm in the top ten if not #1 on all three, both ways. 343,000 Google/54,000 Yahoo/ and I forgot the number on MSN.

I located my stuff from the first pages to the last pages on all three SE's. Without quotes, anything ever written about a Verhoeff in Jan(uary) is there too. There's a Jan Verhoeff who writes Dutch/German on there, at least one other writer/artist with the same name, and a photographer. One of them mentioned my photo/art blog in German (I noticed the link), so I've been marketed in two languages!!! Wahooo!!!

My Grandmother used to say something about fools names and fools faces ending up in strange places - or maybe it was crowing hens and whistling girls always come to some bad end... Ummm I never did really understand either saying - so...

Oh - and key phrases "Refreshing Market" is #3 and "High-Impact Strategic Marketing" is First page.

A neighbor used to say "If you tooteth not your own horn, your horneth will remaineth untooteth." (*Giles Strong) - does this mean I'm "tootething" (sounds painful).

Denise:

You are so right. I sent a e-vite blast to over 300 guest for a networking event that I am doing here in New York. I was so surprise to see when some of the guest responded YES that a profile came up with their responses. I click on the profile just to see what it said, and I am so sure that they don't know that when they filled out those profiles for on-line dating that those profiles come up for that
e-vites, so everytime a person that send out a profile for an on-line dating site is connected to the on-line profile for e-vite when they respond to a evite those profiles come up, one of those profiles was for a professor that I had and I was so shocked to see the profile and her sexuality(which is none of my business) the point I am trying to make is that I am sure she doesn't know that those profile come up along with your responses to an on-line invitation to a networking and or business event. Imagine what people would think if your most intimiate details comes up when you respond to an invitation for a business event. I pulled my profile (on the evite)up to see what would come up, there was only an old photo of myself and my grandson. I never filled out an on-line profile so I wasn't expecting anything to come up, but what if people answered profiles for other sites, when they were young and foolish and forgot about it?

People if you every filled out a profile for on-line dating be sure to find out what sights they pop-up on, because your love-life could show up in the most unexpected place.

Jan - What do you suggest. Tell you what, if people can post there suggestions, I'll pick one.
(addendum to the 'contest' police - NOT a competition). Just some fun. But if someone comes up with one I use, I'll put a one-way link on that domain for you.

AndyE works well when people want to find 'me' (refernece earlier post), but a 'tag' line with wider appeal would be good.

current URL's are - working-together-we-win.com
britishwebmarketing.co.uk
and yourfirstimpression.info

Play on these would be brilliant.

Kai: you are so unique my lovely, that if someone can't find you, they need their keyboard testing. Has the big day got you nervous yet??

Best.

I found my Ryze site listed on the first page under "George Schmidt" plus one other Ryze posted message 5 or so pages back--along with a competitors added comment to my posted message.

I went through over ten pages and never figured out how may pages there were--20 or more anyway. I didn't find any other posted messages after going that far--so gave it up.

But I guess the real point is that who is going to go looking for George Schmidt anyway? I am not selling George Schmidt labelled products!

Please allow me to be funny for a moment --- ;)

I was on another site, and they were discussing the 'unprofessional antics' of advertising marital status - so, since you're single, and I'm single, our only possible purpose for PMing is one or the other of us in "interested"... So, I (am required to tell you) had to tell you that you're awful cute for an English Marketer!

*giggle*

Okay, now the more serious stuff - since (in my case) single doesn't necessarily mean available - I looked over your Ryze page and the thing that jumps out at me about you - is how upfront and honest you are. You're personable, friendly, open and talkative, and HONEST. So, since you're also a MARKETER - I put them together.

Andy E. Barnes
"The Honest Marketer"

If you put them together on all your messages and use the quotes around "The Honest Marketer", you'll soon be recognized as "The Honest Marketer" - much like Dina was the "wordfeeder".

To get this out fast (you're a marketer, what am I saying?) write a few articles and post them on article sites with your new signature, send some out to ezine writers and bloggers (I have a couple of blogs about marketing - send some my way), and post it as a keyword and a signature, as well as something in your website that says who you are. Create an ebook with those articles you're posting and viralize it with your new signature.

Within about 5 days, you will have a signature everyone is recognizing.

Can't wait to see my new link!!!!

Hugs,

Jan

Jan,

Well, I was a bit confused re: PM's, until you explained why it was here.
I'm flattered, to say the least.

As for the suggestions, great. I like.

given that I also run the - On Honest Marketing Network here at Ryze, it really does 'fit' doesn't it.

I am always trying to promote responsible use of on-line marketing and encourage people to take care with how they present themselves.

I think I will run with that.

Look out for a lot more of "The Honest Marketer".

I was thrilled when I first discovered that I could google my name. As a writer, it helps if prospective clients can search my name and read some of my archived work. Searching my name also allows me to discover if any of my work is being used without my permission or posted on various websites in which I have not been notified or received compensation.

Funny thing though, I have one email address that I rarely use but yet many prospective clients contact me through that one. I still can't figure out how they find that particular email address when it doesn't appear on anything. I have only one or two that I advertise or use in my byline.
