Hi Christine,
Here's a couple of ways that you can use to increase your newsletter subscribers:

1. Post your newsletter subscription form prominently on every page of your site.
You need to give people the opportunity to subscribe to your list on every page of your site. The more people you expose to your message, the more that will respond.

2. Add an Ebook or Bonus for Subscribing
People will signup for a free newsletter if you also include a free bonus with that as well. You can give away a free ebook and any kind of bonus gift that you think is suitable that relates to your site.

3. Create a Signature File With Your Ezine
You should have your email software set to include a signature file on every email message you send out. Your signature file should include an ad for your opt-in list along with your free bonus for subscribers.

4. Submit it to all of the Listings.
Continue to find places to list your newsletter. There's a lot of directories and sites, you can find through a search engine related to your market where you can submit your newsletter.

Hope this helps.

Have you come across Opt-In Boom

As a rule, I don't like pop-up,s, exit pages etc but in this instance, I don't think it is too intrusive.
It is an 'exit pop-up' that presents a list of 6 other newsletters that your site visitors may enjoy.

I only use it where a reader leaves my actual newsletter. In this way, I know that they are newsletter readers, so may consider it a useful addition. You can of course use it at the exit of any page, but I would advice caution before putting it everywhere. I know I avoid sites that bombard me with things I didn't ask for.

Everytime you display the pop-up, you are earning credit towards your newsletter being listed on some-one elses.

Newsletters are categorized to maintain relevance, and the service is free with upgrade options - highlighting, bold etc.

Christine,

Welcome to the network.

Here are some of the things I use to get more newsletter subscribers:

- Article Publishing. Publishing articles with Resource Box linking back to your newsletter page encourages your article readers to subscribe to your newsletter.

- Search Engine Optimization. More search engine traffic to your web site means more people come to your web site, and are able to subscribe to your newsletter.

- Create more awareness for your newsletter. Mention your newsletter everywhere. Mention it during your events, offer a subscription on your blog, ask your current subscribers to forward it to others who might be interested, ask people to subscribe on every page of your web site. The more you mention your newsletter, the more subscribers you will get.

Jessica Albon, a newsletter consultant, has shared many great ways to get newsletter subscribers during a teleseminar she gave at MarketingSalad.com. You may pick up the recording here: How to Add Hundreds of Subscribers to Your Newsletter.

I have been a member for a while but never posted, and just wanted to say that this has been very helpful.

I have just changed the title of my newsletter, and changed over to a new service, so have been slowly getting people to transfer with me. So far have only put a sign up on the first page of my website.

I wish I had suggestions to offer, for now I'll just "take" and apply. Thanks a lot!

Christine-
You indicated the target audience was a "writing group" which I will assume means writers, perhaps in some specific forum (e.g., screenwriters) or general (authors, columnists, technical writers, etc.). My suggestion would be to try to find some online groups that attract such folks, get involved, and include information about the newsletter in your email signature.

You will find my business newsletter and my op ed column among the links in my email signature below. If your newsletter is free, feel free to drop me a line about your newsletter if I match your target audience.

Hope that helps.

Michael,
Can you say "Identity theft"?

You should be drawn and quartered for even suggesting using something like that TOTALLY ILLEGAL Magic Subscriber.

It is an invasion of privacy and someone using it could very quickly get in trouble with the CAN-SPAM laws which forbid harvesting of emails and could even open the way to being sued.;
CAN-SPAM puts a $1000 per incident (per email), fine on this type of spam.

If I start getting spam addressed to my PRIVATE, NOT PUBLICIZED email address from visiting that site, you know who I am going to come after, don't you?
And private not publicized means I have one entry for my email address and another for the "reply to".

Now slow down a minute Reg. I haven't used Magic Subscriber, but in reading the page it appears you may have misunderstood the application because of the way some of the sales letter reads.

The software doesn't harvest email addresses (which is illegal and unethical in my book), it simply makes it easier for people to subscribe.

Visitors to the site have to respond to a pop up by clicking yes they are interested in receiving whatever is offered. All the software does is save the visitor from filling in a form.

I don't think it's the best way to get subscribers, but may work for some sites.

Best regards,

I haven't visited the 'Magic subscriber' page, and have no intention to.

Over the Xmas period I signed up for and downloaded a few 'freebies' as I am a keen researcher of what is out there.
You know trhe kind I mean - 117gifts, 30daysofchristmas, etc.

A couple of items I downloaded were little bitsa of software from 'Gold software' collection. some weren't bad in and of themselves.

They all, however, were quickly deleted from my hard-drive as everytime they were fired up, they automatically tried to install 'Magic Subscriber'. I didn't want 'Magic Subscriber', I repeatedly cancelled the download, but it was set to auto, and happened everytime.

Anything that tries to do something on my machine, with my express instruction to do so, gets thrown-out. Now, I don't know for sure if this is the same 'Magic subscriber', but my guess is....

Best.

OK. Let's NOT jump to conclusions here. I've visited the page and read the sales letter. It did not hijack or automatically do ANYTHING. I also searched the net and it's available in quite a few places.

Unless someone has used this software and has experience with it, let's move back to the subject of this thread -- How to increase newsletter subscriber base.

Some excellent suggestions have been given. For me and my clients, the best have been:

1) Specific Topics and niche. Create different newsletters/lists for different groups. I currently have 4 newsletters- ex. Keys to Marketing Success, The Successful Coach & Therapist List, etc. When readers love your newsletter, they'll forward it to other people like themselves.

2) Offer a top-notch free gift. People now expect to get something when enrolling in a newsletter and in my opinion it needs to be something valuable. I give hundreds of dollars in free ebooks, special reports, and articles when new subscribers sign up (they get access to a password-protected area of my site where they can download what they want).

3) Electronic products. When you sell ebooks, distribute articles, etc, include a description of my newsletters (and the free bonus gifts) in the back all products.

4) Special discounts and gifts only available to newsletter subscribers. I offer discounts on my books, coaching, and other products ONLY to my newsletter subscribers. Every so often I'll do a raffle and give something away (ex, a month of coaching) for free or at a huge discount.

5) Blogging- Write search engine optimized blogs on topics specific to your newsletter topics with the url to sign up for the newsletter.

6) Cross-promotion Partnerships- Set up referral partnerships and have people contribute and article or run an add in their newsletter if they promote your newsletter to their lists.

All the best,
Larina
