What other services would you like to see in a web host?Views: 512

Hello,

As many of you know, I am in the process of re-launching several new companies and at this stage am strongly considering returning to the web hosting industry.

I am no longer looking to be 'just a web host' and am looking at additional services to attatch to accounts. Being competent busness people, who I am sure run your own websites (if not, feel free to contact me :) ), what additional services do you think would be helpful with your web hosting accounts?

I currently have a few new ideas I will be attatching, but anything you feel is 'missing' or that would be helpful is appreciated!

Thankyou, Alex

First off, I would definitely include e-mail services, PHP, a MySQL database or two per user never hurt, CRON job availability, at least 500MB of space, and one that's not on most Hosts, a resource network. I know places like Ryze are good for this, but if you offered something that allowed the members of your hosting site to list what they are a resource for and then search that list for resources they are looking for, something that simple could add a lot of value.

An automated annoucement system, server maintenance logs, open disclosre, and a commitment to keep current.

Nothing ticks me off, more than having to email tech support only to find out.... we updated our server, and are working on fixing the bugs. At least if ALL changes were logged for public view, AND automated annoucements were made relative to current status, it would save a ton of aggravation.

Another good thing would be open disclosure of what as a customer, you have access to, what you can do, and what you cannot do upfront. It seems everytime I have switched hosts, none have disclosed their policies. Some have really screwy methods for configuring SQL databases, other have somewhat non-conventional settings in the name of security that cause no small amount of headaches and tech support issues, and others in an attempt to make things simple, make simple changes impossible.

Yet another aspect for those that provide cpanel settup and update scripting is a commitment to keep the scripts updated to the now current version. My old host always seemed to be behind 2-3 versions.

Lastly.... what would be ideal from my standpoint, is a way to provide all the functionality of a dedicated server, eg complete access to everything, yet shared somehow for those of us whose traffic demands cannot justify the cost.

Thank you
Ron
