Here the must do list:

Massage on the beach - best to take off to the candolim end of calangute, it gives you some modicum of privacy

Sea swimming and letting the water dry off under one of the zillions of sun umbrella and jump right in again. If you are comfy with the sea go in the evening around sunset when the water is comfortably warm (but less safe since its too dark to see if you get pulled in)

Desserts at Brittos (baga)

Dinner at Anthony's (next to brittos)

Any meal at Souza Lobo's(Calangute), Little Italy, Holiday Street (the only ONLY veg place i ever fell in love with)

Breakfast at Infantaria (on the turn off from Calangute towards Baga)

Leela's Cafe and J&A little italy on Baga River

PLEASE AVOID ANJUNA FLEA MARKET (its over hyped)

Cruising around at the live shows Jazz house, Prem's (candolim), OPM, Cavala and a million others between Calangute and Baga

If you like to shake a leg, its Mambo's for you

Must Do -

1. Tear off that sheet which reads "planning for Goa" on the top.
2. Land in Goa with lesser clothes and footwear than you have days to spend
3. Hire 2 wheelers - (pls carry valid papers)
4. Try 'Ducheheri' and "ale" - local drinks (thats NOT Feni)- ask for Sheila Bar in Vasco and prepare to get addicted.
5. Try Rava Mussel Fry at Sheila Bar
6. Find "Nostalgia" (close to Varca) and book a table for dinner
7. Try atleast 5 restaurants at Palolem for sea food alone. (specially butter garlic calamari)
8. Cross over to the island - when its low tide... (also at Palolem)
9. Sneak out of everyone's company in the middle of the night... and quietly float in the still waters of Palolem... staring at the clear sky and stars (its scary only for the first minute)
10. At Arambol try the ISraeli food with Humus... its yummm.
11. Climb the cliff (not too high) between Arambol and Querim... take a few beers... just sit... enjoy the wind... the beer... the sun... and hundreds of Dolphins jumping in the waters...
12. After doing all this... get a T-shirt printed which says... i conquered Goa... and send me a copy too...

Must NOT do in Goa...

1. Do not hire 4 wheelers (unless you all want to get drunk silly and return from clubbing only early afternoon next day)

2. Do NOT go to Bagha / Calangute... overrated... crowded... cheapsters... shiktzzzzooooh!!!

3. Do NOT go to Tito's

4. Dont try Non-veg/Fish at just about any shack that you enter...

5. Do NOT sleep early...

6. Do NOT carry this list with you...

:-)

Enjoy !!!

You may wish to read http://www.travelblog.org/Asia/India/Goa/blog-49739.html ; you'll get an idea of areas to visit apart from the beaches.

It looks like most things have been covered but I would add the Saturday night bazaar on the bagga river to the list..some of the local artists that perform there are pretty good(have not been there for the last 3 years though)

Does anyone have any leads on accomodation? Am planning to be there for new years and would like to hire a flat in north Goa, failing which, rooms would do.

Thanx

I echo Ankit's list of Do's and Don'ts.

Do:
1. Arambol, climb to the top of the hill and overlook down the stretch of sand and beaches, its exhilerating, peaceful, quiet and soul-searching. Beer helps in the process.
2. Massage on the beach. I like a massage the way its intended to me, squeeze my stress out. And that's exactly what you get on the beach for Rs.300. Don't expect them to be gentle, you will be feeling the effects even hours later!

Don'ts
1. Anjuna Flea Market is over-rated, waste of time.
2. Calungute/Baga are amongst the most packed beaches, problem is the crowd is not the polished kind. Last year thousands of construction workers from MP/Bihar/Orissa landed on these beaches and literally stood three inches from any woman in swimwear, staring, drooling, ogling...screaming, spitting, trashing, etc etc.
3. Beware of where you eat your fish. We visited a seafood restaurant called Flames (or something like that) on the Calungute-Baga road and ordered a magnificient platter of all types of seafood (cost Rs.2000). I ended up with rashes and had to take an allegra to stop scratching myself silly.
4. Titos is a bloody fake. We were there last year for New Years, and the music was SO bad I swear I wanted to maim the DJ. When the crowd got restless, the organizers used the oldest trick in the book, they got a whole bunch of Caucasian girls on to the stage and got them dancing vivaciously. Knowing the average Indian male's weakness for the fair skin, it worked like a charm and soon all the male crowd was happy. The girl crowd was left sulking.
At the time of selling tickets they told us we could redeem the ticket stub for drinks, but when we tried they politely declined and told us we were "mis-informed".

hi! we stayed at varca (club mahindra) after the conference at cidade de goa was over.

if u enjoy swimming, keep wash n wear clothes . I letrally was in and out of the water all day.So on my swimsuit i wore the wash-n-wear clotes and enjoyed it that way..

the list of do and donts in this thread is pretty comprehensive.

We didnt expriment much with food as we are veggies and also cos we travelled as family (parents prefer not expriementing).

What is most important acc to me is keep time for JUST BEING on a quiet beach and spend time lazing...amazing wat that can do!

I love the parasailing experience too.

greetings from goa
:-)

very interesting set of do's and dont's, but i guess you have to experience it yourself to make up your own mind.

i would add a boat cruise, a trip to ingo's, and dont exactly rate tito's bad depending on which day of the season you hit it. add club cabana. add water sports on the calangute / baga stretch, and you have a heady mix.

as far as beaches go, it depends on what you like - calangute / baga are crowded (by goan standards), but have their own goodies. palolem is virgin and more beautiful, but has less infrastructure in and around.

there are a lot of veggie options too, but the variety reduces as you get away from the towns.

Reporting Live from Goa :)

Headlines only.

1. Excellent drive. The road goes up and down, left and right, one ghat after another. Curvaceous. Fantastic.

2. Desert at Britto's. Too Good. Try the Alpine Chocolate mousse. Devine.

3. Now I understand why it was said to carry less clothes than the number of days.

4. Just got in today. More later.

Contd...

5. Food a Anthony's was good. One could try the barmans special for a different kinda drink.

6. At Infantaria, go for the Infantaria special (Rs. 210) or else it might be better to order breakfast a la carte. Plus do inform them how you like your bacon. They normally serve it rare.

7. Little Italy is located on Holiday Street between Calangute and Candolim. This is one place which closes at 11 pm. Please keep this in mind. Try to get in early so that you can enjoy a few relaxed hours there. One has to experience it to beleive it.

8. Also try Kamats at Panjim near the Church for some good old fashioned idli, dosas, pav bhaaji, chaat etc. Simple good food. Closes by about 9 - 9.30 pm.

I guess all this has been a food review so far. Now for places.

1. Spend full days on the beach under the million sun umbrellas. Carry sunscreen lotion. A good one. Get a massage with the lotion. Drink beer on the beach and a light snack for lunch. Some shacks have a shower so after a dip in the sea get the salty water off under one of these showers.

2. I found the boat cruise at Panjim a farce. No sightseeing and no content in the "cultural" show. Each of their dances was alternated with one from the audience - one for children, one for gents, one for ladies, one for couples, one for oldies, one for all. In the one hour show the MC called the audience to participate for like 40 minutes. Plus since the cruises are in the evening and as it gets dark early there is hardly anything that can be seen from the boat. Waste of time.

3. The night bazaar at Baga was worth a visit. The live performers at the bazaar were fantastic. Enjoyed a lot. The stuff at the bazaar was very expensive. Buy only if you are very good at bargaining.

4. Visited Dudhsagar Waterfalls. 75 kms from Calagute on the Belgaum road there is a place called Molem. From there one has to get off the highway and go to Colem which is about 6 kms away. At Colem everyone has to hire a four wheel drive vehicle for Rs. 1800 per vehicle or Rs. 300 per head. From Colem there is a 22 kms ride on mud roads in the National Park. This road passes through 3 rivers. Through the water and not over bridges. After reaching, there is a short hike to the waterfall which has a pool at its base. Good experience. Very worth it.

5. Spice plantations near Ponda on the sane road as the Dudhsagar Waterfalls. One can visit on the way back from the Dudhsagar Waterfalls. Lunch is included in the entrance fee of Rs. 300. Before lunch there is a short walking guided tour of the plantations where they show you a few spices etc.

6. Will have to visit Goa again to cover more places.

Hey fellow travel lovers -
I gave a print out of the tips on this thread to a friend who went to Goa for her honeymoon early this month. She found the tips extremely useful and covered most of the things-to-do.

Just wanted to thank you all for the useful stuff put down here!
