How many network places to join?Views: 1169

Gali Pushkin
Hi everyone!
Ryze is my first large networking place and I really enjoy being involved. Only from the discussion on this board I learned about LinkedIN, Sitepoint and Ecademy. Surely I examined these places. Everything seems to be so interesting and useful. Now a question:
Do you advice to try all of them. Is it necessary and useful to be involved in as many network groups as possible? And if this is really possible with relation to time. (I am not English speaker, so it demands more time from me to write.)Or it's better to be more active in one place, say on Ryze?
I'll be grateful for your opinions.

Gali,
I do not know much about the other networks, but I must say that what is available to me on Ryze has kept me busy enough to stay focused here. There are many topic and industry specific networks within the Ryze network to keep me interested. Some I have explored and some I have not. I understand that there may be hidden networks also that need personal invites to join.
All in all Ryze is doing the job for me.
Best Regards,

I have found that all the different networks have their own flavour.

Ryze is ver yprofessional, as is Ecademy, though Ecademy is very UK-centric. Good for me, but maybe not for you.

Similarly, OpenBC is very German orientated.

I haven't really got involved with LinkedIn but I got the impression that it was more about bringing individuals with a common need rather than discussion boards like here at Ryze. This is part of what I like here at Ryze, as we get to hear so many views on any one subject.

AdlandPro id very advertising heavy. Too heavy for me, but I am only one.

Just my findings.

Hi Gali and all here,

I agree with Andy. I am on four networks actually - Ryze, Ecademy, LinkedIn and Powerful Intentions. I started off with Ryze and I like the easygoing and friendly atmosphere here. Everyone are friends and lots of idea-sharing (plus subtle marketing) are involved. I find it more US-centric. And Ryzing is easy to learn.

In Ecademy, it is like Andy says, more UK-centric. It is different from Ryze and this can be a good and bad thing if you, like me, are so accustomed to Ryze and popping by someone's Ryze page and scribbling a message or two.

Ecademy also connects to other TNs, Trusted Networks such as BNI, A Woman's Place etc. Someone told me once that he uses Ryze for online networking, Ecademy for offline networking and LinkedIn to find people in industries like he is.

I am on LinkedIn but I find it more suitable for those under employment rather than those who own their own businesses. You can get headhunted too because it's more towards professionals by specific industries. Something I would use if I were still job-hunting or looking to widen my job opportunities.

Powerful Intentions is a cool place to hang out. Lots of great people too. An informal place to talk about what you want in life.

I see where you are coming from. Adland had a very good digest before they decided going to a spam-blog community forum. Thats one of the reasons why I dumped it.

Gali: I've generaly concentrated on USA and New York/ New Jersey metropolitan areas at Ryze, the UK and other overseas markets at Ecademy, then brought the contacts I made at both to Linkedin. Currently at Ecademy there is an effort to strengthen the USA network which now has management's eye. There are also a few yahoo discussion groups devoted to linkedin which are very active to complement one's linkedin usage.
But it will help to define your target audience, then use the search features to see if that audience is at the sites, then start making contacts, as well as joining networks to contribute to the public debate and make yourself known as a knowledgeable individual in your field.

Good day to all,

A change of pace perhaps I will suggest. I joined a Networking group called BNI. I found it to be a great way to meet other professionals and a great way to build my business also.

It does cost to be a part of it, however, the business that I have obtained out weighs the cost of BNI. I know it sounds like an advertisement, but I like the Positive nature of the group and the leadership, verses another organization which is based on Negative reinforcement.

I am on Long Island, NY, there are so many chapters you can go and take a look to see how you like it, it is just a suggestion. Their website it http://www.BNI.com.

I invite all to look. Have a safe and wonderful summer to all.

Gali, I may as well put my two cents in on this discussion.
It really depends on what your goals are and how much time you have to devote to each network.
I have found that each network serves a different group of people, so it really depends on what you're trying to accomplish.
I hope that helped.

Hello Gali

You ask an interesting question, and the answers you have give you a lead, but I think often miss the point.

You cannot know what you will find on this network or any other that will profoundly change your life for the better.

Whatever reason you had for joining Ryze, perhaps to market your product, perhaps to learn more about the world, perhaps to find some friends from far away, makes no difference now. You have already experienced the fact that in being here, in reading the posts and in taking part in the conversations, things happen that are of VALUE, that you never anticipated, and could never have wished for.

New knowledge is gained at the crossroad. Because of that innovation springs from crossroads too. By joining Ryze and taking part in the discussions you sit at a crossroad and gain far more from the passing traffic than any sales you might make here.

I've seen over three years the change in myself and the change in so many other people who actively participate on Ryze. What those people have gained can't be measured in money terms. What's the value of a whole new desirable future based on skills and interests you didn't previously recognise? I've offered this link before: A long valuable read.
http://www.ryze.com/posttopic.php?topicid=738706&confid=1031

But of course sales are made at crossroads too. So making sales has value both ways when value is both offered and received.

As others have said LinkedIn has no discussion boards of it's own, but it does have a very large membership and it's blessed with an excellent search engine. I find LinkedIn is excellent when I want to find someone. A large number of Ryze members are also on LinkedIn, so I'm not the only one who sees that value.

Ecademy has virtually closed it's doors to free members. I don't use it anymore. The restrictions on who you can contact are ridiculous.

OpenBC,is very popular in Europe. Linking to new people you know or want to know is very easy. They are developing networks. The same is true at Academici, with a slightly different target audience.

I'm surprised how well some of my friends have developed pages on MySpace. For a free resource it's remarkably easy to use.

But you can't be everywhere, you can sit at a crossroad, but you can't sit on all the crossroads. So were can you find a group of people who share your interests and passions? Spend some time there. The Internet is a living thing. Groups will change over time, a group may cease to deliver value to you. Find another crossroad, join another community of practice. Move on when you need too.

Regards
John

I've just re-found two pages in my web site that deal with this topic.

The first deals with joining groups.
http://www.ate.co.nz/internet/socialnetworks.html

The second deals with finding good people.

I keep repeating that you become what you DO.
I've just found a page to reinforce that message too.

I trust many of you find those links helpful.

I quite like the discussion here. Good question Gali!

I think everyone has to try what fits them best, and each personality gets something out of each networking utility that seems to fit them well.

I have never used Adland, and will not waste my time based on yours and Williams experience.

Like Andy I have used OpenBC, but to be honest, I felt it lacked too much of the "interaction" component, and if I wanted a bunch of newsletters and light networking, I would just use a newsreader.

My most dedicated networks are LinkedIn, Ryze, and SELECT Yahoo Groups. Google seems impersonal. Facebook seems underdeveloped and highly limited. I LOVE LinkedIn and Ryze, by far they are my favorite favorites!!

I have Hi-5 and am getting ready to dump it-- seems more geared to the flirty aspects of networking than business.

Hi,
I think everyone has said something that I have learned. I love MySpace even for business. I recently joined Ecademy and openBC and feel they both have things to offer though I am still evaluating them. I have to say though that my second networking site that I go to everyday and get a lot from is DirectMatches;
http://www.directmatches.com/VivienLimon. They're different from Ryze but still effective.

Vivien, I think I had preconceptions about both that you named MySpace and DirectMatches. MySpace on reputation, DirectMatches on the name. When I clicked on your URL it appears DirectMatches has a pure business networking capability that has nothing to do with dating right?

I just started reading about MySpace in Fortune last month.. I had only heard about it from the negative publicity on it's IT Image problems and think from that, deduced it was a kids toy (kind of like my experience with Hi5).

Thanks for sharing your experience! It appears as I let go of some of the service that do not fit me, perhaps I will discover through this conversation, some new networks that fit better. :D

Hi Dawn,
It made sense that you felt that way. Although MySpace has its problems, I can reach almost 300 people with one bulletin and no one minds.

I assure you DirectMatches is strictly business not dating. Though maybe they shouldn't have changed their name. What happens is the company helps you make matches to what you want business wise. It's really cool.

Dennis Miller, Attraction Marketing
Hello Gali,

With regard to your question about being involved in multiple online networks, I find that being a member of several can be very beneficial.

For me that does not mean that I spend a large amount of time at each network every day.

I always recommend getting familiar with one community at a time - Create your profile, signature, picture, desciption, etc. - and THEN join another one.

Because online communities usually experience a high amount of traffic they are also usually ranked highly in the search engines.

So, if you create your profile and include a key word that will help your target market find you, your profile can be working for you while you are doing something else - like sleeping! :)

Once you are established in several online communities, I do recommend spending a few minutes at each daily or weekly to maintain your presence and create friendships.

Once people at each community get to know YOU, they are going to want to know what you DO.

So you are creating your profiles to create enough curiosity for other members to visit your website or contact you personally.

I ALWAYS use my real name and I include my phone number. Many people have told me they appreciate the fact that I appear to be a "real" person. Of course I AM a real person and I am happy to connect with new friends daily.

Hope this helps.

Many blessings.

In gratitude,

Gail - let's say you really really really like pizza - should youonly eat pizza forthe rest of your life? - of course that would be OK - you can do anything that you want and there is no rule or plan or person in the entire world that could every possibly say to you - you are doing something wrong - never - you could even stick with the pizza and add some toppings on it every sing day - changing so that you end up having as much diversoty in your pizz eating as someone else who thinks that they are doing better than you by eating different meals from different restaurants - but in reality they are the same -In various countries - the basics are different but there does sometimes seem to be a dietary bsic which pervades or is a necessary staple - such a rice or potatoes - noods - pasta - etc. and the diet is merely a variation of the additives to these staples no matter what the different dishes are called - so perhaps if you master or learn to work within the one arena or learn to mater the tools that are provided in one particular group you may be better of than simply doing as many different arenas as possible from the word go - and yet doing things that way is as a valid choice as any other choice - as long as your needs are met and what you are indentding to accomplish is just that -accomplished -so focus on what you want to accomplish and don't look outside to anyone for your guide since you rneeds are your guides - I read this morning that if you don't find any financial benefit to your business by having a cell phone then of course you can have it for your own personal convenience but there is no way you can go around thinking that you need the cell phone for business if it does not help generate profit because you need to be on call for your customers or patients or whatever youhave to do for your profession what ever it is -

and as far as business is concerned - I guarantee you can definitely run a successful business somewhere on this planet - or many places on this planet or in the universe - without ever touching a computer or sending one message via the Internet - milliopns of people have so far alread - the record comapnies did not all of a sudden g out of business when the radio started broadcasting songs or books have not in the least disappeared now that we have pdf files - no way -

I think Linda made a great point. You should master one before moving on. Pretty much a great business principal on any level. I use MySpace and do enjoy that although it is definitely geared to the social end. There are however so many people in their network that you can find great people to network with none the less.
Vivien - how have you done with DirectMatches, how long have you used that sight and has it lead to any sales or leads etc.
