Mumbai-New places to hangout / eat- Add yours to the list pleaseViews: 21959

Each time we want to hang out somewhere on the weekend or dine out- we end up going to the same old places. Deciding on where to go itself gets so time consuming. I came upon this idea of having restaurant / pub names written on small chits of paper and thrown into a bowl at home, so that whenever we want to get out- we just pick up a chit and drive out.

I found out about this place Tapioca Bar in Bandra last weekend, and much to my embarassment and my group's irritation-after driving around in circles, we came to the address mentioned only to realise that it is closed since a year.

This brought me to the idea of everybody suggesting the names of their tried, tested and loved places to make a database, from which everyone can benefit. I'd like to request that we build one for Mumbai. Other cities can take a similar initiative on a different thread.

I have the latest copy of the Times food and night out guide, but find it difficult to pick out where to go from that huge a list. Hence, the initiative.

I'll start with my contribution to the list.

Lemongrass cafe- Restaurant
Turner Road, Bandra (one of the 3 restaurants in a row, Pot pourri, Sahibaan and lemongrass)
Good ambience
Mainly Thai food-with other oriental recipes thrown into the menu
Gets crowded on weekends, so reach there early.

I can vouch for the food here, have eaten here atleast 5 times.

Please add your favourite places to the list, with some important details like address / location, kind of cuisine etc.

I believe there is a great place in Bandra called the Chocolate Lounge. Any details?

N Iyer
So we have just two so far-
5 the restaurant is pretty close to home so will give it a try.

The chocolate lounge was exactly opposite to where the erstwhile tapioca bar was. Is it a pure dessert place or a bar? the name is confusing.

I've been singing their praises on various threads recently...Try out the food from Jaffer Bhai's.
Mughlai food, lovely biryanis and Tikkas, and they have a less spicy range called 'Arab' style.
Truly lovely, quite affordable, free home delivery and the home delivered food is cheaper than if you go to the restaurant itself.
Outlets at Metro, Grant Rd, Dongri and Mahim.

mmm...good food places in Mumbai...:)
1. I like '5' too. One of my all time places.
2. 'Tamarind'- on pali hill. Opposite Fab India (clothes). Small place but great food...from continental to kheema pav types...the drinks (non-alcoholic) are good too.
3.'Olive', Bandra- Quite like the food there.
4.'Churchill', Colaba- One of the original old good joints.
5.'Basilico'(Colaba and Bandra)- great food, even better desserts!
6.'Papa Pancho', Bandra- for all aunthetic Punjabi stuff.
7. 'ThaiBan', Bandra- one of my all time old faves...amazing Thai food!!! Now that they've renovated the place, it rocks!
(Thaiban, papa's and basilico are all on the same stretch)
8. 'Ghazali', Vile Parle East- best food place for seafood!!!! I've always licked and chewed my fingers too here... :)
9. 'Mocambo', Fort (near Bombay Store, Mahesh lunch home)- One of the few places that have retained it's Iranian flavour but also have moved with times with the decor. Amazing dhansak and sali chicken! Must try!!! And greatttt caramel custard puddings!
10.'Pot Pourri', Turner Road, Bandra- One of the good old hangouts...the food never disappoints.
11.'Kareem's', Carter Road- for all kebabs and biryanis.
12.'Vaishali',Chembur- Good food, great ambience...
13. 'Pizzeria',opp Ambassador Hotel and next to Not just Jazz by the Bay, Marine Drive- for everything- good food, ambience, view....
14.'Rain', Juhu- Again continental food a la Olive, but really recommended.
15.'The Dome', Intercontinental, Marine drive- The rooftop of the Intercontinental offers a fabulous view of the sea...visit at night...
16. 'Sin', Breach Candy- Cosy and good food.
17.'All stir fry',H20/Marine Drive- On the beach! :))))
18. 'Fountain'at Fountain- famous for their sizzlers but now serve continental food too. I loved the ambience before they renovated it...luckily they retained the Mario Miranda sketch on the wall.
19.'Mocha', Bandra and Churchgate- good snacks, great shakes and wine is served after 7pm.
20.'Yokos', Santacruz- anyday for a sizzler.
21.'Amore', Carter Road- desserts!

..there are more...but will post them later.

1) Chawla’s Dhaba / The Dhaba – location – Oshiwara , food – Punjabi , Veg and non Veg, must try – chicken curry kheema tari, with hot nans and glass of nimbu pani (shikanji) or beer whatever you fancy… a good meal for 4 should cost u about Rs. 500-600 without drinks ofcourse

2) Deccan – oshiwara, food – hyderabadi, strictly okayish joint… a meal for two under Rs. 200, without drinks,

3) Out of the Blue – bandra near union park, food – its known for its fondues, must try – desi fondue (am personally not to fond of bland food so this one appealed to me), sizzlers and pasta ( u can make your own pasta), a good meal for two should cost around Rs.1200 -1500 with a couple of cocktails thrown in. got a decent wine list too if interested. It has great offers for ladies who lunch on a particular day with things like manicure etc thrown in and buffet lunches which are reasonably priced.

4) Gazalee – Andheri east – good seafood,

5) Suncity – Andheri east – good buffet lunches , value for money Rs.230 per head with pint of beer

6) Mirador – Andheri east , good buffet lunches and dinner , again value for money

7) Cirkus Cirkus – Andheri east, good buffet lunches / dinner

8) Urban Tadka – good food , Punjabi cuisine… must try tandoori chicken and spicy nimbu pani… don’t miss the jal jeera, a meal for two should cost Rs. 500 -600

9) Rice Boat – for kerala cuisine – Andheri west and Bandra east, must try saddya

10) NH1 Dhaba – Andheri east – Punjabi cuisine, small menu but excellent preparation, a meal for two should cost you under 500 without the drinks…

11) Royal Challenge – goregaon east – its got a great sit out – low seating with hukkas and rajasthani tables, good food, should set you back by 800-100 for meal for 3

12) Jinnies – Pali market, seafood, great interiors, got a bead vendor located inside the hotel for shopping till your food is served… decent food not as compared to gazalee, a meal for 4 should set you back by Rs. 1500-2000 with a couple of cocktails thrown in

13) Tunga international and Tunga paradise… good food, quick service,

14) Mista Paaji – the dishes served here are more like the ones served in papa pancho.. I could hardly make out the difference and the pricing is also the same, well its owned and managed by the same person who owns papa pancho… ;)

15) Picasso – goregaon west near bangur nagar, Punjabi cuisine good food,

16) Trishna opened in Andheri west…. Don’t need to say much on this one….

17) Kailash parbat – Andheri west, I totally freak out on the dishes served here… good dal pakwan, sindhi curry, bhee kababs, bhee curry, etc etc, a good hearty meal for two should set u back by Rs.500,

18) Salt and Pepper, Myst, Ginger Marie – all are Andheri west near infinity mall, salt and pepper for heavy Punjabi meal, good nonveg, must try butter chicken, Myst for continental and Ginger marie for the salads (which actually make up for a meal )

19) TGIF, PopTates, Andheri west

20) Sasural – lokhandwala – this renovated place does serve some great food

One is Simply grills on the terrace of Orchid -next to domestic airport, Vileparle East- Ambience is wonderful, at night you can see the planes take off and land, it's very breezy and yes the food is wonderful too. As the name suggests it has Indian and continental grilled food on the recipe. A good selection of wines too.

Kobe's Sizzlers- Tried it for the first time a few days ago-went to the Phoenix Mills branch, outside the mall complex. Sizzlers were excellent. I found them to be better than Yoko's ! Meal for 4 came upto 1500-there's another branch at Andheri east enroute to the international airport (Marol?) Would love to go there again.

If anyone recommends a buffet, please mention the price too!

Chenab in Vashi...definitely worth a visit.
Just went there last night for dinner.
But the fish was a little suspicious...ravas didn't taste like ravas and the pomfret wasn't fresh at all.
The chk and mutton was superb, as were the various kulchas, parathas, and the lassi was really good (acc to hubby)

"Oh Calcutta" at Tardeo opp tulsiwadi has really good Bengali food. The veg food is also great and good choice. The bengali sweets are to die for! Run by the sweet bengal guys.

"Nebula" at Shivaji Park, opp reliance webworld has good VFM moghlai food. They have Italian too but very Indianised.. might appeal to some.

"Indigo Deli" has some real good cold meats and Cheese, good stock of wine and of'course excellent "Noveulle Cuisine"

"Don Giovanni" opp JW Marriott in Juhu does really really authentic Italian food. The "cassata" is a real dessert made of goats cheese and candied peel.. its awesome, and NOT icecream! The pastas are all home made.

"Rajdhani" has great Guju Thali food at crawford market opp the masjid.

"Panchvati Gaurav" has good rajasthani thali, opp Bombay Hospital.

I quite liked the wood fired pizza marinara as well as their antipasti... They had a good wine selection as well...

Only problem was the guy who passed off as the sommelier did not know how to distinguish between Jacob's Creek and Rooh Afza... You are better off making your own pairings...

That is a laugh, the sommelier in most places, do not know their wines at all!

All they do know is how to sell you a wine where they get the best cut on price.

Even the way of serving a wine is abysmal, dripping all over, no damask ever!!

The glases are to be laughed at... a red wine cannot be enjoyed when it is shoved into a small little glass and filled to the top!!

Any glass with a stem is passed off as a wine glass!

I had the server in the plush bar at the JW Mariott telling me that I should have a sherry because they had no port, its the same thing he confidently told me!! That too past midnight after a meal....

No one mentioned Britannia in this thread?
The Berry Pulao, the Dhansak... mm.
(I hope it hasn't closed down. The owners were thinking of selling.)
Open only for lunch, though. And closed on Sundays.

Also, for Dhansak, the lane just behind Fountain restaurant at Fountain has Military Cafe. The dhansak is only available on certain days, though. They also do excellent pulaos and biriyanis.

Another place for Parsi food, in Bandra, just opposite Punjab Sweets and the new 5 Spice, is Ashmick's Snack Shack.

A couple of new options in New Bombay:

Flavour of Kolkata in the City Mall, in the APMC area, on the road from Vashi to Turbhe, does great Bengali food.
Ph: : 2783 2773 / 2738, 8716

And Choupal in Centre Point hotel at Turbhe does North-West Frontier food. (There's also a rooftop dhaba called Kake-di-Dhaba - I think - that gives you the dhaba experience, complete with choices of charpoys and rope cots to lounge on. And it's open till 3 a.m. Serves booze. Centre Point: 27683311/22.
Warning: the road to Centre Point is seriously screwed. Much danger to your vehicle's undercarriage.

I hope Britannia IS open, or else it will be the same old story of landing up with hungry stomachs at a place that no longer exists.

Friends- This site www.bestofbombay.com is something I found recently and the information on the site seems quite accurate as regards restaurants, pubs and hangouts in Bombay (with the exception that it still lists a CLOSED place, the same Tapioca Bar)

Yes, been to Brio 4 times so far, and it's been a good experience. Their Pastas taste quite authentic-

Try the hunk of the Mumbai Masala sandwich, you need company to finish that! Also the Spaghetti Alio Olio is very very flavourful.

Check out the pics here-

It's quite a good VFM, considering the quality of ingredients used and the great tasting food.

And if you happen to go there, do pick up one of their gourmet breads, at around 30-40 Rs, they are worth it!

We went to two restautants over the weekend- Asia Wok above Bandra SHopper's Stop- While I must admit, the food tasted good, the attitude of the manager wasn't quite. He asked us to have a seat in the adjacent pub 'Seven' for 20 minutes until we got a seating, but then when we got back in half hour, we still didn't have a place. ALl because he assumed we wanted to sit in the pub for much longer. We had to stand around for another 15 minutes to find a place.

We also came across a family who despite having made reservations, didn't get a place for quite some time. I guess these kind of restaurants, who do a roaring business don't care much for customers. Their ' WE-have-other-customers-waiting-anyway' attitude is quite irritating.

Thai Ban at Pali Hill- it's already been recommended by a few on this thread. Just to update that the service was good and the food was HOT-just that it's a little bit TOO congested. If you are a claustrophobic person, this isn't the place for you.

Has anyone been to China Gate at Bandra? If yes, any reviews? On our way back from Thai Ban last night, we saw loads of people waiting to get in, and this was at 10.45 , pm on a Sunday, so just curious...

Bharat/Excellensea at Fort Market.
It's the best sea food ever...better than the Trishnas and Maheshs for sure.
Awesome, Awesome food.

Another favourite sea food place is Sindhudurg at dadar. Different style of cuisine, relatively cheaper, excellent food, excellent service.

Highway Gomantak is also good (Bandra East, on the highway). Though its quite cheap, I find the portions too miniscule. The food is excellent though, but much simpler.

By the way. I'd be very grateful for any tip-offs on new restaurants, particularly in the New Bombay area, but elsewhere too.

I write the odd restaurant review for Time Out Mumbai. (So I will shamelessly use your information for personal gain. Though if it makes you feel better, restaurant reviews don't pay very much.) Email -- zigzackly AT gmail DOT com -- or PM appreciated, though I will keep coming back to this thread to drool.

Forgot to add these- 'Soul Fry',near Pali Market, Bandra. Good sea food and live band on Monday nights. And I must say, the singers are really good!
Also, Mainland China in Andheri for Chinese. Also heard that Mangi Ferra in Juhu is good.
Indigo, Colaba has a great ambience and excellent food!
Peter- answering your question...
There's 'Sushi's Chill Out' in Nerul, 'Chenaab' at Vashi, 'Mast Malvani' at Airoli... some of the better ones.

Ok folkses, I'm getting hungry now. When is the next mixer?

I don't call myself an expert in Parsi cuisine, but I have learned a bit in the past few years, being in the business....
Jimmy Boy serves the worst food that pretends to be Parsi cuisine. Strictly avoid. The food is terrible, badly served, and full of unnecessary food colour.
Ideal Corner, Britannia and even Mocambo are worth every penny spent there.

Guys---Should we add Origami to the list????

I've been doing some research on restaurants serving low cal cuisine-found this one called Great Punjab next to Bandra Shoppers-they actually have a whole section of the menu dedicated to low cal -oil free food...Proper Punjabi cuisine minus the calories, and the owner actually says it tastes as good!

Looks like we must try it out sometime :)

For all those who don't like low-cal stuff, there's the regular fare served too!

Ok, so glad to be here.

Great to see that I have known and enjoyed most of the places mentioned here - especially the ones on Lovemarks' lists. Yes, Britannia rocks, was there a couple of weeks back, had the Chicken Berry Pulao and the caramel custard. Any day, anytime! Also, in my very very short time in Pune, thoroughly enjoyed the Mastani at Sujata Cold Drink house, a very very special house preparation of milk shakes. I have seen a branch on Goregaon SV Raod - if someone has tried it, please fill in. Also glad to see Vaishali from my very own Chembur, its been one of my family favourites, never thought it would be on anyone's great food list. And come to think of it, it should be right up there.

Meanwhile, I dont think I saw this mentioned on the list. And yes, it is a bit of a trip - on the Western Express Highway after Dahisar Check naka. Did it on a whim one evening. - Dara's Dhaba.

Great Dhaba-style cots, and awesome highway atmosphere, tried the Sarson da Saag (yes, i am slowly beginning to appreciate vegetarian), seekh kababs and chcken aftab with missi and makai rotis. The kababs and chicken were great. Then at midnight, the jalebis with rabri. Umm...yeah, sinful. :)

Also, Nandita, sorry to hear about your failed mission to Tapioca Bar. I was there not very long ago. And I am pretty sure its still open. You mean the Tapioca Bar behind the Punjabi restaurant on Linking Road, right? Across from Chocolate Lounge, where the chocolates and chocolatey drinks are okay, but the seating is very uncomfortable.

And yes, I like Tapioca Bar, for the relaxed atmosphere two strange sounding fruity drinks at the bottom of the menu. Again, will fill in when I get back in there.

My two cents -

Fountain Plaza next to Handloom House at DN Road, Fort. Superb Malayalee Muslim food, especially the Chicken Biriyani.

New Excelsior Cafe. Parsi/Irani food. They also have a weigh machine which I think is doctored so you keep coming back. :)I would.

Uncle's Kitchen - on the Malad-Marve junction. Chinese food, but very specific recipes. The only Chinese I would have in the whole world other than the classic Chinese joints in Tangra, Kolkata. (And if you are in Kolkata, must have the Nawabi Roll and Bhojo Hari in Goriya Haat :))

Bade Miya's anyone? And their cheaper and debatably better counterpart near Kala Ghoda? - Ali's, I think?

Sherlock Holmes in Bandra - does it still exist? European. I remember a nice Polish dish.

And the new Khyber above Squeeze in Khar. Love the Chicken Badami plus the atmosphere.

Also, newly arrived in Bandra, Palimala Road - The Bagel Place, small, "New York style" place, great couches, decent bagels. Great to hang out.

Mika's at Breach Candy, across from the old Crossword store. Anyone tried it yet? Do tell.

For superb South Indian served in your car, Mani's Lunch Home near Ruia, Podar. Also in Matunga, Shobha'a near Matunga station. (Central.)

More to come...

Looks like you did mean the same Tapioca Bar - sorry to hear its closed down.

Meanwhile, still pitching in -

Rama Nayak's at Matunga Station - for great vegetarian unlimited thalis.

City Cafe, I think its called - Goan, this one's on Mint Road. I remember another simliar sounding Goan place near Metro.

Discovered Waffles at Bandra, next to Papa Panchos - for savory and meal-style waffles, exciting, but didnt like the ambience. They have other branches across the city.

Caravan above Red Box cafe in Bandra, a few buildings away from Zensi. Expensive, but superb North West Frontier cuisine, and great atmosphere.

And those great Maharashtrian joints at Shivaji park - all of them are great - vegetarian snacks as well as non-vegetarian meals. Down the street as you go towards Portuguese church.

Sernya - at Lokhandwala, near the Lotus Petrol Pump, a superb Tibetan joint, a hole in the wall, but worth it.

My 2 cents:
1. Cafe city at worli naka - amazing food, lovely bhurji, and they've got a huge list of non-veg dishes. complete VFM.

2. Irani restaurant opposite andheri (w) station - Great butter omlette, bun butter. complete VFM.

One more entry without which the list of entries of south mumbai restaurants is incomplete:

Crystal at chowpatty, its near the sukh sagar signal, going towards babulnath.
It has the best north indian food. Spicy preparations, a bit oily at times, the best phulka rotis.
Its got the dated feel about the place. Advisable to go when the weather is a bit pleasant as it doesnt have an A/C. but you wont be complaining about it after the food.
Complete VFM.

1) The Kabab place (Forgot the name) next to Restaurant 5, near St. Thresa's Convent, SV Road at S'cruz (W). Yummy!!!!! try it to beleive it. and you bet its not heavy on your stomach too!!!
2) Santosh Lunch Home, at Santacruz (E), Vakola Masjid for Chinese food especially, apart from Biryani, Malvani and Pizzas. You have to see the crowd for people waiting outside the restaurant to sit in, even on week days, inspite of more than 1500 sq.ft of sitting area. This is apart from the home delivery he does with 3 phones and dedicated people to receive orders. I'm told that his delivery has reached Grand Hyatt Hotel, Kalpataru, and even BKC.

MOCAMBO IS THE PITS!! NOW. I WILL NEVER GO THERE!

Here is why.

http://freegeek.livejournal.com/2890.html

March 16th, 2004
Cafe Mocambo - Another one bites the dust.

I had seen that Cafe Mocambo (D. N. Road) had been renovated when I'd passed by it (a number of times) but I wasn't quite prepared for the shock I got going in.

Cafe Mocambo used to be a quaint little Parsi food place. The food was excellent and cheap. The waiters were languid but managed to get your order to you real quick. (I guess they had real fast cooks.)

One could liesurely sit there for a couple of hours in the afternoon and eat heavily and still run up only about Rs. 150 among two people. Which I did a lot of afternoons with ____.

They had the best scrambled eggs on toast I've ever eaten. A lunch favourite was Kheema with eggs which was a huge plate of kheema mixed with two half fried eggs sunny side up. Tasted great with pau. Finally finish it off with some caramel custard.

Now the Cafe Churchill guys have taken over and destroyed the place. The entire menu is gone. No more kheema :-( . The lazy waiters are gone. The chilled out ambience is gone. It's now a dull "fake" place like any other X random place pretending to serve continental food.

Highy depressing, I feel like I've lost a part of my history. I remember feeling like this when Baghdadi's (Colaba) shut down for a month and was rumored to have closed down (but fortunately it started again).

There goes CNB - changed his pic and nic again and I was wondering who that was, until I took the cursor on his id...

The Mocambo that I went to was mostly Italian fare plus some good measure of Chinese and sundry 'continental' stuff thrown in.

The food was 'OK', but still came across to me as one of those restaurants that adds a TON of cheese to everything and calls it continental. I understand what CNB's saying, coz Manpreet was with us and he expressed exactly the same sentiments as soon as he entered the place - and once again on seeing the menu card. I must comment on one thing, that the bread they served along with pasta was almost like a pav-bhaji bread. Our regular Pav slit in the middle, buttered and sprinkled with chilli flakes.

Pranav – this is the 5 spice in Bandra? Can you please give the location? I'm getting confused between 5, the restaurant, spice tree and 5 spice. Kotachiwadi sounds good, but since we rarely get to go that side, I don't think I'll get a chance unless there is a food meet there.

Sanjay - I'm sure Tea center is still there. Have been there a couple of times and thought the ambience to be extremely charming. I've just been there for tea, but have heard that their breakfast at around 150 bucks is a real good deal.

Also, you are second person to mention Sernya. I've seen it while driving on Link Road and surprised that people have actually noticed it, tried the food. It's supposed to be the only authentic tibetan food around...

We went to this place - Spaghetti Kitchen in Phoenix Mills last week. Food was good, portions small and not too VFM. Starters have even smaller portions -and also the mushroom salad - which almost looked like a single giant sized mushroom chopped up into tiny bits. The pizza there was good though, EXTREMELY thin crust, as I like it with a variety of toppings. This is a part of the Blue foods chain (Bombay Blues , noodle bar etc.)

Food at 5 spice,

I have been to 5-Spice lotsa times but the one in the town.

My fav starter is veg. crispy and threaded panner dish (forgot the name) - they make it really gud.
In the main course, i generally have corn fried rice (seems its their speciality) and for a veggie they have this exotic veggi in a wok or some think of that sort( again dnt remember the name)

But the thing to die for is Desserts. - death by chocolate is awesome and so is the regualar hot brownie...and the best is Mission Immpossible - its quite a task to complete that thing.

I have been to the Fort and Bandra branch of 5 Spice. Both serve very good food. Will try the desserts when I go there next.

Try On Toes (Pub - on the 1st floor) at Juhu on Saturday evening. get there before 8.00pm to get a seat. The ‘Locha Nan’ there is amazing!! I think they now have a branch in Khar as well.

Just as a warning to all vegetarians….

PLSE BEWARE of this restaurant called SPICE TREE in Bandra....

Went there on on 3rd Oct for a bite. Ordered ‘Crispy Veg.’ and found a piece of CHICKEN in it. On our complaint the manager Mr. Tarun Bhatia said ‘Sorry sir….we are in service industry…ye sab ho jata hai’.

On-toes is a nice neighbourhood pub - it's totally crowded even on a weekday. As Ankit pointed out, it's best to land early. Their crispy bhindi served as starters is very popular too.

Lot of people have recommended SPice tree on this thread - I'm surprised the management had such a casual attitude to the issue. Thanks for sharing this!

That's an almost impossible budget for a 5 star. You would have to look at infrequent lunch buffet options. Check the Recents Events or Current Happenings sections of the newspapers like Mid-Day and Times.

Two new places to add to the list-

DIva Maharashtracha - Shivaji Park / Mahim worth a visit for traditional maharashtrian food

White - Italian restaurant in Goregaon West, in the road connecting link road and SV road, right from Billabong school on link road. Very good Italian food, prices on the higher side for the Goregaon area, but worth a visit for sure.

Hi Foodies,

Long time .... no mixer ........ ? ??????? Chandra, when is ur nxt trip 2 B'bay ?

'Sizzling China' Sasson Docks still rocks !! Last nite was there 4 dinner. Their chicken haka noodle and prawn fried rice was just awesome. You could have it without any accompaniment 2 ! The noodles brought back nostalgic memories of that taste - as kids when we used 2 go 2 Mussourie, the Tibetians there had eating joints in their homes - the momo's and noodles were jst gr8!

And during my last trip 2 Pune discovered and tried these 3 places -

1). 'Bombay Brasserie' - Dhole Patil road - Kabab Factory ( unlimited ) - 275/- veg & 325/- non-veg. 8 types of kababs, veg / non-veg biryani, dal raita and 2 desserts. After eating the kababs u get 2 full....

Monday to saturday they have a lunch Buffet at 175/- ( YES ! All inclusive tax ) VFM ! and it was a steal....... !! 2 soups - 1 veg and 1 non-veg - the chicken soup was very good; 3 types of salad - including a pasta one, the coleslaw was very good; usual onion, tomato, cucumber salad also; raita, papad, pickle, chutney; 2 non-veg - there was chicken rarha and chicken manchurian ( very good, specially manchurian ); 3 veg dishes - sukha aloo methi, paneer & corn, mushroom-mutter ( all were very good ); 1 dal; saffron-peas pulao; basket of roti & naan; 2 desserts - vanilla iceream & hot gulab jamun. Hogged like anything that day ......

Another day, had dinner there. Wanted 2 try their Raan Masala ( 350/- ). It's unlike the 'Shalimar' Raan Masala and doesnt have much gravy or heavy masala. Quite dry, but was very tender and succulent and just had some garlic naan with it. Total bill for 3 ppl was 500/-.

2). 'Sigree' - Dhole Patil road - dinner buffet - 385/- + tax - 6 types of salad ( including non-veg );6 veg & 6 nonveg kababs ( made on ur table ); 2 veg; 1 non-veg curry; biryani; dal; 2 desserts.

3). 'Polka Dots' - Kalyani Nagar - Continental stuff - 2 dishes and a basket of breads; along with one soup; 1 dessert and 1 coffee. Total bill - 489/- for 2 ppl. food was very good. Will try 2 post the pics later.

Hey Suman,

If you went to the complex where "Sigri' & 'Bombay Brasserie', I can recommend tht U go to La Dolce Vita.

If U have not been there, I wld like the suspense to stay. Just make sure u r prepared to pay thrice of wht U have mentioned for these 2 places.

Nobody mentioned Barbeque Nation in Bandra (someone please help with directions for this one. I think it's near Club IX). Went there many moons ago, and liked what we ate -- Dinner (with unlimited barbecued delights at your table which has burning coals in the centre, followed by a buffet spread) @ Rs. 400 per head. Go on an empty stomach.

KFC in Bandra SUCKS!

Read about Soul Fry in this thread. Went there last week. Decent food -- though the seafood at Gajalee in Vile Parle is far far better. At Soul Fry, we tried:
Rice/Naan,
Squid in Green Curry,
Bombil Fry,
Teesrya Masala,
Prawn Peri-Peri or something (was very tomato-ish, weird),
Pomfret curry
Some beers, iced tea

Haven't been to Mocha in a long time. Really like the Oreo Cookie Shake there!

After reading SO MANY recommendations for 5 Spice- Pali, Bandra - I finally went there for lunch with a friend -

The food is AMAZING and i haven't seen quantities as LARGE as these ever - what we ordered for 2 can easily be devoured by FOUR OR FIVE people...

We ordered -

Veg Fe Wontons - Fried crispy wontons in a red gravy with lots of shredded veggies, absolutely delicious, but must be devoured immediately, you cannot doggie bag this one.

Burnt Chilly Fried Rice - all this recommended by my friend who is a regular here...one of the best fried rice i have ever eaten, with plenty of fried big red chillies (something like the tambram Mor Molagai which we have with curd rice) . This is so good you can have it all by itself. It is literally a mountain of rice - will need 5 hungry ppl to finish it all.

Mushrooms in Hunan Sauce - this was an OK dish, nothing out of the world as compared to the burnt chilly rice.

TO polish all of this - Death by Chocolate, soft decadent chocolate pastry, drizzled generously with chocolate sauce served with a scoop of dark chocolate icecream

All this for 600 bucks, with more than half parceled home for dinner...

If you haven't eaten here, you sure have missed something!

I have heard that take-outs are a good option there.

I've been checking out a few places in Navi Mumbai...

Very honestly, this place has a long way to go as far as good, consistent restaurants are concerned...

Flavour of Kolkata (Sanpada) has totally burnt out. After an initial excellent run the food quality has dropped drastically and service is indifferent to say the least.

There are lots of Chinese/Mughlai/ Punjabi multi-cuisine joints which serve strictly ok fare...mainly mom and pop joints which have to yet come into their own.

On the highway, just after Sanpada, on the left is one superlative restaurant. Flavours. not to confused with the earlier mentioned one...
This is a sprawling multi-cuisine place, has a very well stocked bar (which is wheeled to your table!!), good service and really great food. Prices are like typical Bombay rates, a meal for 2 could cost anything from Rs 500 upwards.

The Park, at Belapur, boasts a couple of restaurants catering to the local corporates. I think its a 3* hotel. The coffee shop, Zest, has a really nice buffet..approx 650 per head. Decent spread...the usual salads, cheeses, limited variety of cold cuts, hot starters, soups, and main courses, and a reasonably large array of breads and desserts. the bakery is quite good.

Then there are branches of quite a few established restaurants- Mahesh Lunch Home, Moti Mahal (Delhi), Mini Punjab, and a few of the Mcdonalds, Dominos, etc.

Kharghar has a whole lot of snack shops serving bong snacks...but they don't seem to be able to sustain a consistemnt level of quality..

Still have lots to discover...meanwhile hubby and I make regular trips into 'town' :)

Bengali food: Howrah at the New Bengal Hotel next to VT station. Lavish Bengali non veg thali for 130 bucks. The Bengali drinks are prety cheap too.

Seafood: Pratap Lunch Home, Fountain. The cheapest and best sea food biryani in town. As long as you dont mind the 'drunkard' ambience.

Grass: New veg food restaurant at the Nakshatra Mall near Dadar (w) station. Great ambience speciallythe outdoors. Serves inexpensive combos and hukkas.

Malvani food: Malvan Kinara, Portugese Church, Mahim.

Maharashtrian: Saaybeeni, Shivaji Park. try the chicken liver pulao.

Iranian: Kayanis. The only place that claims to serve authentic Iranian tea.Its really yummm! Also try he freshly baked stuff esp the pattice.
Sassanian boulangerie opposite GOL masjid near Metro Adlabs has value for money parsee meals. the bakery has good stuff.

Mazgaon has some really cool places. Doesnt score high on ambience, as its frequented by the budge food crowd. But food is great.

Cafe Gulzar is amazing. The fish biryani they dish out is quite something.Last I went there the fish was stuffed with rice unlike the usual fish in rice. That place has a lot of Muslim eateries that are VERY cheap.I cant remember the name of this place. Its opposite to the girls hostel All Saints Home and gives free food every evening to slum dwellers.Once when I was really broke I ate there. Had a dish of piping hot tandoori rotis and keema all for a sum of under 15 bucks. Food was good. There are several bakeries in that area too and i remember gorging on their nan khatai and other cookies.Thats one area where things are dirt cheap.

Cheers,
PIYA
